Topic: Hearing Change & Animal Hearing

Curricular Outcomes:

3.9.11. Describe changes in hearing that result from continued exposure to loud noise and from
the natural process of aging.

3.9.9 Compare the range of hearing in humans to that in other animals

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:

1) Recognize that loud sounds & aging can cause hearing change
2) Understand that animals hear differently than humans

Materials:
Hearing & Sound slide deck
I-Pads x 5
QR codes for animal hearing research videos
Animal Hearing Research worksheet
Parts of the ear game (dice & worksheet)

Lesson Procedure
Intro: (15 min)

1) Review last class


2) Labeling the ear game (hyperlinked in slides)
3) Interactive model of the ear (hyperlinked in slides)

Body:

Activity 1: video (15 min)

1) Watch hearing change/ damage video (hyperlinked in slides)


2) Show the broken comb as an example of damaged cochlea hairs
3) Have a class discussion about hearing change & damage
Activity 2: Safe vs Dangerous sounds smartboard activity (10 min)

1) Pull sticks to have students come up to the smart board and move the sound examples into the
dangerous or safe category on the smartboard

Activity 3: Animal vs Human Hearing video (10 min)

1) Watch the animal vs human hearing video


2) Have a class discussion about animal vs human hearing

Conclusion: (10 min)

1) Recap the lesson


2) Have students share their favorite thing they learnt

Friday

Activity 1: Animal hearing research Jigsaw (20 min)

1) Explain the Jig saw: each group will watch a video about a different animals hearing using the I-pad
and QR code. While they are watching the video, they will fill out their animal hearing research
handout. When they are done, they will then need to explain how their animal hears to one person
from each group.
2) Make sure each table group has a QR code, an I-pad, and a worksheet for every student
3) Supervise & assist where needed while students watch the videos (early finishers can work on their
science early finisher activities)
4) Put students into Jigsaw groups to share how their animal hears in comparison to humans and
observe their conversations

Activity 2: Parts of the Ear Dice game (20 min)

1) Demonstrate how to cut & assemble the parts of the ear dice
2) Demonstrate how to play the game. Students roll the dice and then color the part of the ear they
rolled on their sheet. The goal is the be the first to color all the parts.
3) Hand out the parts of the ear dice & game sheet
4) Supervise & formatively assess understudying while students assemble their dice and play the game
Activity 3: Hearing Bingo (20 min)
1) Quickly review bingo
2) Have the paper passers hand out the bingo boards & bingo chips
3) Play ear Bingo
