7. LUIS WIRTH
(August 28, 1897 – May 3, 1952)

was an American sociologist

and member of the Chicago

school of sociology. His

interests included city life,

minority group behavior, and

mass media, and he is

recognised as one of the

leading urban sociologists.


He was the first president of the International

Sociological Association (1949–1952) and the

37th president of the American Sociological

Association (1947).
"urbanism as a way of life" published in the

American Journal of Sociology in 1938.


His research was mostly concerned with how

Jewish immigrants adjusted to life in urban

America, as well as the distinct social processes

of city life.

8. ULF HANNERZ

(born June 9, 1942, in Malmö) is a

Swedish anthropologist. He is

currently an emeritus professor of

social anthropology at Stockholm

University. He is also a member

of the Royal Swedish Academy of

Sciences the American Academy of

Arts and Sciences and the

Austrian Academy of Sciences.


Hannerz's research interests includes urban

societies, local media cultures, transnational

cultural processes, and globalization.


His works Soulside and Exploring the City are

classic books in the area of urban

anthropology.
Hannerz is the author of “Cosmopolitans and

Locals in World Culture” (1990). His theory

essentially explores cosmopolitanism from the

analysis of expatriates.
9. Herbert J. Gans
(born May 7, 1927) is a German-born

American sociologist who taught at

Columbia University from 1971 to

2007.
One of the most prolific and

influential sociologists of his

generation.
Herbert J. Gans served as the 78th President of

the American Sociological Association.


He trained in sociology at the University of

Chicago, where he studied with David Riesman

and Everett Hughes, among others, and in social

planning at the University of Pennsylvania,


His first book, The Urban Villagers (1962),

described Boston's diverse West End

neighborhood, where he mainly studied its

Italian-American working class community.


A subculture is a group of

people within a culture that

differentiates itself from the

parent culture to which it

belongs, often maintaining

some of its founding

SUBCULTURE principles.
Subcultures develop their

own norms and values

regarding cultural, political,

and sexual matters.

(especially in the 1960s) a person of

unconventional appearance, typically having

long hair, associated with a subculture

involving a rejection of conventional values

GOTHS
a style of rock music derived from punk,
typically with apocalyptic or mystical
lyrics.
a member of a subculture favoring black
clothing, white and black makeup, and
goth music.
PUNKS
1. a loud, fast-moving, and aggressive form of rock music, popular in the late

1970s and early 1980s:


"punk had turned pop music and its attendant culture on its head"

2. a worthless person (often used as a general term of abuse):


"you think any of these punks they got fighting today could stand up to Joe

Louis?"

3. soft, crumbly wood that has been attacked by fungus, sometimes used as

tinder

SKINHEADS

a young man of a subculture characterized

by close-cropped hair and heavy boots,

often perceived as aggressive.


COSPLAYER

the practice of dressing up as a character

from a movie, book, or video game


CULTURAL APPROPRIATION
is the inappropriate or unacknowledged

adoption of an element or elements of one

culture or identity by members of another

culture or identity.
CULTURAL APPRECIATION
Cultural appreciation is taking the time out to learn about

different cultures and their traditions. To become more

open in understanding the truths about a culture and

embracing them in a respectful manner.


Every culture is absolutely beautiful and unique, and it's

no wonder other cultures want emulate that.


Cultural appreciation is enjoying foods and music from

different cultures, and giving credit to the source.
