The Original

During the battle for the Osowiec fortress in 1915, German Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg ordered
the fortress to be bombarded with shells filled with chlorine in order to destroy 900 Russian defenders
of the fortress. After shelling, 7,000 German soldiers attacked the fortress without expecting resistance,
but 100 mutilated Russian soldiers, coughing up blood and parts of their own lungs, were able to stun
the enemy by organizing a counterattack. The zombie-like Russians opened fire and attacked the
Germans with bayonets, causing panic and forcing them to flee in fear through their own traps, causing
even more casualties. The surviving Russian soldiers took the opportunity to destroy the fortress and
retreat while the Germans hesitated. “Attack of the Dead Men” gave rise to legends in Germany about
the immortal Russian soldiers who were reborn from the dead for battle.
