Vitamins
• Organic nutrients required in small amounts to maintain
growth and normal metabolism are called vitamins.
• Vitamins are needed for the normal functioning of our body.
• Unlike carbohydrates, lipids, or proteins, vitamins do not
provide energy or serve as the body’s building materials.
• Most vitamins with known functions are coenzymes.
• Vitamins are the complex organic compounds found in some foods
which are necessary for the well-being of the entire body.
• Vitamins are necessary for normal growth, good health, good
vision, proper digestion, healthy teeth, gums, and bones, and for life
to be maintained.
• Vitamins act as catalysts in certain chemical reaction of metabolism
in our body, which laid to normal growth and good health.
Hypervitaminosis
• Hypervitaminosis refers to dietary intake of a vitamin that
exceeds the ability of the body to utilize, store, or excrete the
vitamin.
• Since water soluble vitamins are not stored in the body, few
cause any problems.
• However, because lipid-soluble vitamins are stored in the body,
excessive consumption may cause problems.
Fat-soluble vitamins
• All require bile salts and some dietary lipids for adequate
absorption.
