MATHEMATICS 7
First Quarter, Week 1 – Day 1

Grade : Section:

Competency: The learner illustrates well-defined sets, subsets, universal sets, null set,
cardinality of sets, union and intersection of sets, and the difference of two sets.
(M7NS-Ia-1)
Objective: To describe and illustrate well-defined set
Topic: Sets
Materials: paper, pencil

Concept Notes:
• Set - a list or collection of well-defined objects or ideas. The objects in a set are called the elements
or members of the set.
Example: Which of the following collections are sets?
a) the past presidents of a country
b) good players who have played for the national team
Solution: The first collection is a set but the second one is not since we are not given the criteria
whether the player is good or not.
• Sets can be defined either of the following ways: (1) a verbal description, (2) the roster method, a
listing of the members separated by commas, with braces { } used to enclose the list of elements,
and (3) the rule method or set-builder notation.
Example: Write in roster and set-builder notation if 𝑉 is the set of vowels in the alphabet.
Solution: Roster Method ⇒ 𝑉 = {𝑎, 𝑒, 𝑖, 𝑜, 𝑢}
Set-builder Notation:⇒ 𝑉 = {𝑥|𝑥 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑣𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑙 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑎𝑙𝑝ℎ𝑎𝑏𝑒𝑡}
(Read as "The set of all 𝑥′𝑠 such that 𝑥 is a vowel in the alphabet.")
• Sets are usually denoted by capital letters such as 𝐴, 𝐵, 𝐶 and so on. The symbols "∈" and "∉" are
used to indicate that an object is or is not an element of a set respectively. For example, if 𝐹
represents the set of all flowers, then 𝑟𝑜𝑠𝑒 ∈ 𝐹 and 𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑜 ∉ 𝐹.
• Universal set - the set that comprises all elements being considered in a particular discussion.
• Empty set or null set - a set without elements and is denoted by { } or the symbol ø.
• Cardinality of sets - the number of elements in a given set
Example: 𝐴 = {𝑎, 𝑒, 𝑖, 𝑜, 𝑢} Solution: 𝑛(𝐴) = 5
The number of elements in 𝐴 is denoted as 𝑛(𝐴) = 5.

Exercise 1 Write the following in rule method or set-builder

notation.
1) {5,10, 15, 20,… }
2) the positive integers greater than 6
Exercise 2 Write the following in roster method.
1) the five sense organs of the body
2) {𝑥|𝑥 𝑖𝑠 𝑎𝑛 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑔𝑒𝑟, 5 < 𝑥 < 12}

Exercise 3 Find the cardinality of the following sets.

1) 𝐸 = {2, 4,6, 8, 10}
2) 𝐹 = {𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑜, 𝑎𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑒, 𝑏𝑎𝑛𝑎𝑛𝑎, 𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒}
MATHEMATICS 7
Week 1 Day 2
Objective: To determine the number of subsets of a given set

Concept Notes
 Set 𝐴 is said to be a subset of 𝐵, written 𝐴 ⊆ 𝐵, if and only if every element of 𝐴 is also an
element of 𝐵.
 Given set 𝐴 = {𝑚, 𝑠, 𝑎} and 𝐵 = {𝑚, 𝑎, 𝑡, ℎ, 𝑠}, we can conclude that 𝐴 ⊆ 𝐵 since every element of
𝐴 is in 𝐵. Note that every element in set 𝐴 is in 𝐴, 𝐴 ⊆ 𝐴 for all sets 𝐴. Also, ø ⊆ 𝐴 for any set 𝐴
since it is impossible to find an element in ø that is not in 𝐴.
 If 𝐴 ⊆ 𝐵 and 𝐵 has an element that is not in 𝐴, we write 𝐴 ⊂ 𝐵 and say that 𝐴 is a proper subset
of 𝐵. Thus {𝑚, 𝑠, 𝑎} ⊂ {𝑚, 𝑎, 𝑡, ℎ, 𝑠}, since {𝑚, 𝑠, 𝑎} ⊆ {𝑚, 𝑎, 𝑡, ℎ, 𝑠} and, 𝑡 and ℎ are in the second
set but not in the first.
 The number of subsets of a set is 𝟐𝒏 where 𝒏 is the number of elements in a given set. Thus, the
set {𝑚, 𝑎, 𝑡, ℎ} has 24 = 16 subsets and the set {1, 2, 3,4, 5, 6, 7} has 27 = 128 subsets.

Example: Determine the number of subsets and list down all of them. Given:
{2,3, 4, 5}
Solution: 2𝑛 = 24 = 16 subsets
The subsets are: {2}, {3}, {4}, {5},
{2, 3}, {2, 4}, {2, 5}, {3, 4},
{3, 5}, {4, 5}, {2, 3, 4}, {2, 3, 5}
{2, 4, 5}, {3, 4, 5}, {2, 3, 4, 5}, ø
Exercise Determine the number of subsets and list down all of them.
1) {𝑎} 2) {𝑒, 𝑓} 3) {2, 4,6}

MATHEMATICS 7
Week 1 Day 3
Objective: To perform the set operations: union and intersection of sets

Concept Notes:

Let 𝐴 = {0, 1, 2,3, 4}, 𝐵 = {0, 2, 4,6, 8}, 𝐶 = {1, 3, 5,7, 9}.
1. 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵 2) 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵 3. 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵 ∪ 𝐶 4. (𝐴 ∪ 𝐵) ∩ 𝐶
MATHEMATICS 7

Let 𝑈 = {1, 3, 5,7, 9}, 𝐴 = {5,7, 9}, 𝐵 = {1,5, 7, 9}.

1. 𝐴’ =
2. 𝐵’ =
3. 𝐴’ ∪ 𝐵 =
4. 𝐴′ ∪ 𝐵’ =
5. 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵’ =
6. 𝐴’ ∩ 𝐵′ =
