1) There are different types of composite cements and bonding agents that are classified based on their viscosity and bonding system used.
2) Resin cements can be self-cured, light-cured, dual-cured, or self-adhesive. Bonding agents have evolved over generations from using phosphoric acid to self-etch primers and all-in-one systems.
3) The choice of bonding agent and resin cement depends on factors like the type and length of the restoration, as well as any pre-treatment needed for surfaces like porcelain or zirconia.

bonding procedures By Dr Aung Kyaw Sein (City Dental group) Viscosity of cements
Low, Medium, High and ultra high viscous
Resin. Classify according to bonding agent used Total Etch System :-use Phosphoric acid with two bottle primer and bonding or one bottle bonding agent.
Self Eatch primer System:-Two bottle selfetch
primer and bond or One bottle : all in one bond.
Self Adhesive System
Types of resin cements
1. Self cured resin cement ( C&B
Metabond ,Comspan,Super bond ).
2. Light cured resin cement for veneer.(NX3
Kerr, Clear I Kuraray, Relly X Veneer 3 M ,etc)
3. Dual cured resin cement.
4. Self adhesive resin cement (dual cured type)
5. Resin modified glass ionomer cement.
Bonding Agents
For self cure resin :- chemical polymerization
usually used catalyst peroxide or amine.
For light cure resin:- Photo initiator( quinone
group). Bonding agents
1st generation bonding agent is invented in
1955 by Buonocore(Bis - GMA with etchant)
2nd Generation bonding agents 1970.They only
improve coupling agents .Smear layer of dentine was still not removed.Only enamel was etched.
3rd generation late 1970 .Primer was
introduced .Both enamel and dentine were etched and rinsed completely .Collagen collapsed and weak bond occurred. 4th Generation 1980s and 1990s :- Smear layer was complete removed and moist dentine concept was introduced.Three steps : Etch ,prime and bond.Hydrophilic primer infilitrate the expose collagen to form hybrid layer and hydrophobic monomer bond hybrid layer and composite coment. This systems are very effective if used correctly.Although newer system are introduced this system still the standards. Fifth generation 1990s :-Primer and bond placed in one bottle to reduce clinical steps.Bond layer is susceptible to water absorption and degradation lead to bond failure because of combine layer of hydrophilic and hydrophobic monomer unlike in 4th generation whereas hydrophilic layer is covered by hydrophobic adhesive layer.Notice that not all fifth generation adhesive are compatible with dual and self cured cements because of low PH or too acidic monomer.Acidity deactivate the tertiary amine in chemical cured composite . Sixth Generation late 1990s and 2000s:-Also called self etch primers.Acid containing primer applied first followed by adhesive layer or equal amount of self etch primer and adhesive are freshly mixed just before application. Two bottle System.Less sensitive to hydration state of collagen and increase in bonding strength to dentine but decrease in bonding to enamel.PH in the self etch primer is not enough for enamel.Selective etch to enamel is recommended . Dentine should not be etched it can lead to over etched and postoperative hypersensitivity. Seventh Generation in early 2005:- also called one-bottle self-etch system or All-in-one bond. All agents have to incorporate into single bottle and keeping them in stable condition is challenging because the system contain water and may prone to hydrolysis and breakdown.Becareful of date and storage condition. Also susceptible to water absorption and breakdown and bond failure like in 5t generation.Acidicty in this system is also very high and not compatible with initiator systems. Eighth Generation in 2010:- agent containing nono filler particles.Nano filler increase vicosity and increase the penetration depth into dentinal tubules increase hybrid layer thickness.Universal bonding agents evolve adding primer restoration ( DMP for Zr and Metal, Saline for porcelain .).Self cure bonding agent . Dual Cure activator(DCA) mixed with adhesive bond to become self chemical cure. Depending on etching procedures Etch and rinse or total etch
Self etch (Selective etch)
