INTERVIEW GUIDE

Title: Single Parenthood: A Phenomenology

A. Before the interview proper

1. Arrive on time with at least 2 audio-recorders, pen/pencil and notepad.
2. Have the informed consent from ready.
3. Thank the participants for accepting your invitation to be part of the study.
4. Go over the informed Consent Form.
5. Address any question the participant may have.
6. Have the participant and yourself sign the form (you can sign 2 copies so that you keep one
and the participant keeps another one.)
7. Inform the participant that you are going to start recording now.

B. During the interview proper (start with the easier questions and take some short notes)
1. How long have you been a single parent?
 If it is okay to ask, may we know the reason why you had to raise your child/children
alone?
2. What, for you, is the most difficult aspect of being a single parent?
3. Do you have other people that helps you in raising your child?
 Say from family members/relatives or friends.
4. How do you manage your professional work and your responsibilities as a single parent?
 Does it affect the time you spend with your child/children?
5. How has single parenting affect your child/children?
 Does it affect your child’s academic performance?
 Does it also play a part in your child’s relationship with other people?
6. What are the things you do to stay connected with your child/children despite of all the
responsibilities you have?
7. What have you learned from being a single parent?

C. Ending the interview proper

1. We are just about to finish. What other important information pertaining to this topic can
you share with?
2. Thank the participant.
3. Inform the participant that you might contact him/her again in the future if there is
something you need additional information on.
D. After the interview proper
1. Make sure at least 1 audio-recorder recorded well.
2. Leave the research setting in the same (organized) state you found it.
3. Find a quiet place where you can write more elaborated field notes.
