Experiment 1:Investigate the cohesive and adhesive properties of water(surface

tension).

1. Please read and understand the methods below about the 1st experiments. The
experiments title is Investigate the cohesive and adhesive properties of water(surface
tension).
2. In grouping, prepare one video showing the methods given to explain about the
experiment.
3.Please write a complete Lab Report. The report should be written in group. Please
use provided guideline to write your Lab Report.

Materials:
Tap water
Penny
Plastic pipette
Paper clip
Binder clip
Toothpick

1. Predict how many drops of water will fit on a penny. Record your prediction in
your lab report in a complete sentence.
2. Use the plastic pipette to drop water on the surface of a penny. Drop carefully and
slowly to fit as many drops as possible on the penny. Count each drop until the water
spills over the side of the penny and record.
3. Compare your results with the people in your group. Record the range and calculate
the average number of drops that fit on a penny from the people in your group.
Record in your lab report in a complete sentence.
4. Add more drops to the penny, without letting the water spill over. Carefully
observe and draw the water on the penny in your report..
5. Invent and record a hypothesis for the behavior of water that you observed, using
the language of cohesion and adhesion in relation to the water and the penny.

Question:

1. Define surface tension and give one examples in daily life that using concept of
surface tension.
2. How do water bugs walk on the surface of the water?
