STRUCTURAL THEORY

SEATWORK #1

INSTRUCTION:
1. ) Use long bond paper (The paper orientation is PORTRAIT)
2. ) Write your name in each page at the top left corner of the paper (SURNAME,
FIRST NAME, MI)
3. ) Show your complete solution( Free-body diagram, summation of forces and
checking) and box your final answer
4. ) Solution should be hand-written

I. Determine the whether the structure is stable, unstable, determinate and

indeterminate, also compute for the degree of indeterminacy

1.

R=2+1+1+1=5
C=1
R-C=5-1=4
4 > 3 (stable and Indeterminate)
DI = R - C - 3 = 5 - 1 - 3
DI = 1

2.

R =3+ 1+1 =5
C=2
5 - 2 = 3 (Stable and Determinate)
DI = 0
3.
R=2+2=4
C=1
4 - 1 = 3 (Stable and Determinate)
DI = 4 - 1 -3 = 0

4.

R=2+1+1+1+1=5
C=2
5 - 2 = 3 (stable and Determinate)
DI = 0

5.

R=3+3=6
C=2
6 - 2 > 4 ( stable and Indeterminate)
DI = 6 - 2 - 3 = 1

II. Compute for the Reactions on the beam

1. Determine the rection at the support A and B

Since support A is roller and support B is hinge
R= 1+ 2=3
C=1
3 - 1 < 3 (unstable the structure is not in equilibrium)

2. Determine the reactions at the supports for the structure shown.

FBD

Consider Beam CB
∑MC = 0 (cw + )
0 = 390(4) - RBV(12)
RBV = 130 kN

∑FH = 0 (→+)
0 = CH - RBH
RBH = CH

∑FV = 0 (↑ +)
0 = CV - 390 + 130
CV = 260 kN

Consider beam AC

AC = 52 +102
AC = 5√ 5 = 11.18

∑MA = 0 (cw + )
0 = 260(5) + CH (10) - 363.36(2/3)(11.18)
CH = RBH = 140.83 kN

∑FV = 0 (↑ +)
5
0 = RAV + 363.36( ¿ - 260
5 √5
RAV = 97.5 kN
∑FH = 0 (→+)
10
0 = -140.83 + 363.36( ¿ - RAH
5 √5
RAH = 184.17 kN

Checking
∑FV = 0 (↑ +)
5
0 = 97.5 + 363.36( ¿ - 390 + 130
5 √5
0=0

∑FH = 0 (→+)
10
0 = -140.83 + 363.36( ¿ - 184.17
5 √5
0=0
