PNAP ADV-15 - Fixing of Reinforcement for Concrete Works

Q: What are the requirements for fixing of reinforcements?

ADV015 provides guidance on good practice for fixing reinforcement in concrete
works.

It states that bar and fabric reinforcement from each batch should not be fixed until
testing is completed and that loose and excessive rust on reinforcement should be
removed by wire-brushing.

It advises to provide sufficient numbers of spacers, chairs and other supports to

maintain reinforcement in the correct location as shown in the approved plans and to
maintain the specified minimum cover at all positions.

The Spacers and chairs should be placed at a maximum spacing of 1.5 meters, but in
the case of 20 mm diameter or smaller bars, the spacing should be suitably reduced
to avoid sagging.

Reinforcement should not be contaminated or displaced because of access over the

reinforcement. Access should be obtained by using planks and ladders.

The registered contractor is responsible for providing continuous supervision to

ensure that the fixing of reinforcement is carried out correctly and no displacement
occurs during placement and compaction of concrete.

The authorized person/registered structural engineer should inspect all

reinforcement after fixing and before concreting to allow for necessary rectification.
