“So you didn’t tell me it was a messed-up idea to keep this all a secret because. . .”
“Because experience is the only teacher,” Hey-Soos says. “Even if I could have told you, it would have been a lecture.
Why do you think kids don’t listen to their parents, or people don’t leave churches and do what the preacher tells them?
There’s only one thing that’s universal.”
“What’s that?”
“The truth.”
Reading: Use the passage above from the novel Deadline, by Chris Crutcher, to answer the following questions.
__________2. Which line of dialogue provides the best evidence that “Hey-Soos” understands how the listener would
have viewed his advice?
(1) I used to get annoyed when my parents gave me a curfew on the weekends. (2) We discussed and debated each time
ending in an ugly argument. (3) I changed my mind since then. (4) My best friends have gotten in dangerous situations
by staying out all night. (5) I’m quite sure I would have suffered the same consequences if I didn’t have a curfew.
