1.  Purpose

Real-time analyzer RealTime (hereinafter program) is designed for taking

measurements of vibrational waveform in real-time mode. Measuring units of the

following systems can be used as a hardware component:

- BALTECH VP-3470;

- BCM

The program is a complementary tool supplied within the main software such as

BALTECH-Expert. To install the RealTime program during the main system software

installation select the Custom installation type and mark the «RealTime» component.

Figure 1.  The «RealTime» component selection

The main features

The program allows to set the measurement parameters and run a single process of

data collection or continuous measurement.

Purpose 7
RealTime
Operation manual

Received data are processed using the calculated mathematical functions and are

displayed for report in the form of a table with scalar values. A series of measurements

may form the trend of the calculated parameters.

In addition to the main graphical representation of measured data in the form of

waveforms, auto-spectra and octave spectra, the following additional analysis tools
are avaliable to the user:

1) polar plot

2) orbit plot

3) Bode plot (transfer function)

4) correlation plot

5) cepstrum

2.  User interface

The program has a standard structure and control tools. Both personal computer

keyboard and the «mouse» manipulator can be used when working with the program.

2.1.  Program startup

To start the program use the RealTime shortcut on the desktop.

If there is no shortcut launch directly the executable file wxRealtime.exe.This file is

located in the same directory with the main executable file of the system software.
It is the Windows program directory by launch. For example, when working in
64-bit version of Windows 8 with the BALTECH‑Expert software, the destination
folder is C:\Program Files (x86)\BALTECH‑Expert by default.

When working with the BALTECH VP-3470 system, before starting the program,
connect the measuring device using the USB interface cable and activate the
function «Control from PC» (see BALTECH VP 3470 - Vibration-balancer manual).

The main program window will open after program startup (Figure 2).

Figure 3.  Ribbon

The ribbon at the top of the program contains two tabs: «Measurements» and

«Devices», as well as a button for opening the dialog box «About wxRealTime». The

«Measurements» tab is used to collect data directly and to analyze it, the «Devices»

tab is used to select the device and its configuration.

The results window allows to switch the way of displaying of measured data by

switching between «Waveforms», «Spectra», «Octave» and «Results» tabs.

2.2.  Connecting devices

Information about the status of the connected device is displayed in the status bar

at the bottom of the main window (Figure 2). To control the current device, select
the «Devices» tab on the ribbon.

Figure 5.  Tools on the «Devices» tab

When the RealTime program is launched for the first time, all devices with the

drivers located in the same folder as the executable file will be added. The short

name of the active device is displayed on the left button of the panel, which is used

to switch devices. The «Del» button is used to delete devices. To add a new device

click the «Add» button and specify the appropriate dll-file with the device driver.

If you add the device driver that has already been listed, a copy of the device will
be added to the device list. At the same time the measurement settings of the
copies can be different and that allows to quickly switch the acquisition parameters
if necessary.

The acquisition parameters are set in a separate window called by the «Settings»

button.

2.3.  Acquisition parameters setting

Acquisition parameters setting window view depends on the features of a particular

device (see examples Figure 6, Figure 7). Various parameters could be set including

the active channels, the type of the signal, sampling frequency and the length

(number of samples).

When working with BALTECH VP-3470 the settings window has buttons for selecting

parameters and the «Info» button which is avaliable when the communication

parameters are set correctly and the device is in the «Control from PC» mode. When

clicking on the «Info» button the status window displays information about the

connected system (the name of the system - internal name, serial number, internal

software series - firmware) and connection status of the vibration transmitters

(sensor) (Figure 8).

2.4.  General settings

The button «Settings» on the «Measurements» tab opens the general settings

window in which you can set additional parameters for processing and displaying

the measured waveforms. These settings are not associated with specific equipment.

Following parameters are related to spectra analysis:

• Centre waveforms

• Window type

• Octave type

• Averaging mode

• Averagings nums

The following parameters are used for polar graphs and orbits:

• Filtering

• Harmonic

• Q-factor

You can set the basic levels for displaying waveforms in dB in the general settings
window.

2.5.  The process of measuring vibrational waveform

Measurement tools are grouped on the tab «Measurements».

The RealTime program allows to take one measurement or perform a series of

measurements by pressing «Run once» or «Continuous» accordingly. To do this

select the appropriate function from the group «Measurement» (Figure 10). When

in Continuous mode press «Stop» button to finish gathering the data.

Figure 10.  Measurement buttons

Switching the vibration units buttons requires a new measurement for the update.

The unit selection buttons are located in the appropriate group (Figure 11).

2.6.  Measurement results

Measurement results will be shown in all tabs «Waveforms», «Auto-spectra»,

«Octave spectra» and «Results». You can analyse data by switching between the

tabs. In continuous measurement mode graphs and results are updated continuously
as each data set is collected. In this case, when an averaging is specified, the results

are updated in moving-average mode.

Buttons in the «Analysis» group are used to open additional graphical tools to

evaluate the measured data.

Figure 12.  Analysis buttons

Measurements on two channels are required for Orbit and Polar plots.

Working with the graphs is described in detail in the manual for the main software.

Measurement results can be printed or saved for later analysis. To display the report

form use the «Print» button on the tab «Results».

The measurement results can be saved in a binary form. To save the last measurement,

use the «Save» button. To open the saved data press the «Load» button.

Figure 13.  «File» function buttons

When importing from file, you can select data to be displayed (Figure 14).

Figure 14.  Select data for importing

2.7.  Computed data

Various scalar parameters could be calculated from measured data depending on

practical application of the RealTime program.

This scalar parameters are displayed in the table on the «Results» tab.To add
new parameters, use the «Add» or «Insert» buttons. You can change the existing

parameter by clicking on the «Edit» button after selecting this parameter in the

table. To delete the selected parameter, use the «Delete» button.

Double-clicking on the cell with the parameter opens the window with trend for

this parameter on the corresponding input channel. If you want to build a trend for

several parameters or channels, it is necessary to continue adding parameters to the

trend window by double-clicking on the required cell. After conducting a series of

measurements the obtained trend can be saved in a binary file. To open a previously

saved trend use the «Trend» button.

18 User interface
RealTime
Operation manual

As the extension of the binary data files and trend files is the same, it is recommended
to save the measurement results and the built trends in different folders on the
disk. The attempts to load the binary file with the trend as a data file with the
results, and vice versa, will result in the «Invalid data format» error.

3.  Examples of application of the program

3.1.  Calibration of the measuring device

You can create a set of parameters for recording the measured values when testing
the measuring device using a shaker.

The example of setting the computed data for the registration of RMS vibration

velocity at a base frequency of 160 Hz is shown below (Figure 15).

3.2.  Coast down measurement

Using the RealTime program, it is possible to measure the coasting-down of the

machine which allows to approximately estimate the resonances of the structures.

The figures show the trends of the following parameters, calculated from the data

taken by the BALTECH VP-3470:

RMS of vibration velocity in a wide frequency band in mm/sec;

RMS of vibration acceleration on turning speed in m/sec^2;

Turning speed in Hz;

RMS of vibration acceleration on the second turning speed in m/sec^2;

Doubled turning speed in Hz.
