EPIPHANY HOME BLESSING CEREMONY

The manger is decorated regally, containing the enthroned Christ Child. All gather around the manger
while the visiting priest leads the prayers. If there is no priest present, the father of the family leads:

P: God’s peace be in this home, All: And in all who live here.

Antiphon:
P: The star burned like a flame, pointing the way to God, the
King of kings; the wise men saw the sign and brought their gifts in homage to their
great King.

Canticle of Mary, the Magnificat, Luke 1:26-55:

All: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; for He
has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations shall call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for
me, and holy is His Name.
He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation. He has shown the strength of His
arm, He has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the
hungry with good things and the rich he has sent away empty.

merits and intercession enjoy health in body and protection of soul; through Christ our Lord.

HOUSE BLESSING
P: Let us pray. O Lord, Almighty God, bless this house that it
may become a shelter of health, chastity, self-conquest, humility, goodness, mildness,
obedience to the commandments, and thanksgiving to God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Upon this house and those who dwell herein may Your blessing remain forever, through
Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.
The father of the family and the three “kings” take blessed chalk (one piece each) and proceed to the
front door, accompanied by the priest. While all look on, the father reads the corresponding words as the
kings inscribe their initials onto the lintel. (The initials CMB also stand for Christus mansionem
benedicat: May Christ bless this house.)

Final inscription on lintel should read: 2 0 + C + M + B + 22: “The three wise men,

Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar

followed the star of God’s Son who became man

Bendición de las casas en la festividad de la Epifanía

Bendición de los hogares para el día de Epifanía, de acuerdo al Rituale Romano

Esta antigua costumbre que se realiza hoy, 6 de enero, solemnidad de la Epifanía

del Señor, y que recoge el antiguo Ritual Romano -anterior al Concilio Vaticano
II-, consiste en escribir con tiza/gis -previamente bendecida en la iglesia por un
sacerdote-, en las puertas de las casas, las dos primeras cifras del año en curso,
seguido por C+M+B, y detrás las dos últimas cifras del año. Este año la
inscripción sería: 20+C+M+B+22. La inscripción se deja hasta Pentecostés o
hasta que la borre la lluvia. Las letras C+M+B significan, en latín, Christus
Mansionem Benedicat (Dios bendiga esta casa) y coinciden con las iniciales,
también en latín, del nombre de los tres Reyes Magos: CASPAR, MELCHIOR,
BALTHASAR.

20+C+M+B+22

Marcar con tiza/gis la puerta del hogar es una forma de celebrar y, literalmente,
dejar marca en ocasión de la Epifanía y por la bendición de Dios en nuestras
vidas y hogares. Con el tiempo, la tiza/gis se irá borrando. A medida que lo haga,
nosotros dejaremos que el significado de las palabras latinas profundice en
nuestros corazones y se manifieste en nuestras palabras y acciones: Christus
mansionem benedictat, «Que Cristo bendiga esta casa».
