RIZAL AS A LINGUIST
• He continued his studies of languages. He knew 22 languages.
- Tagalog – Ilokano –Subanun - Bisayan – Spanish – Latin
– Greek – English – French – German - Arabic – Malay – Hebrew –
Sanskrit – Dutch- Catalan-Italian – Chinese – Japanese –
Portuguese - Swedish - Russian
RIZAL AS FARMER
• He bought 16 hectares of
land in Talisay.
• He ended up acquiring 70
hectares, containing 6,000

hemp plants, 1,000 coconut
trees and numerous fruit
trees, sugarcane, corn,
coffee and cacao.
• His students helped him in
farm labor and he imported
agricultural machinery from
the US.
RIZAL AS BUSINESSMAN
• He partnered with Ramon Carreon and made
business ventures in fishing, copra and hemp
industries. His most profitable venture was

the hemp industry.
• He organized in January 1895 the
Cooperative Association of Dapitan Farmers.
Its purposes were to improve the farm
products, obtain better outlets for the Dapitan
farmers, collect funds for their purchases,
and help the producers and workers by
establish a store wherein they can buy prime
commodities at moderate prices.
RIZAL AND JOSEPHINE
BRACKEN
• During the lonely days of Rizal due
to Leonor Rivera’s death which left a
void in his heart. In God’s own time,
this “somebody” came to Dapitan
like a sunbeam, to dispel his

melancholy mood.
• She was Josephine Bracken,
“slender, a chestnut blond with blue
eyes, dressed with elegant
simplicity, with an atmosphere of
light gayety”
• She was adopted by Mr. George
Taufer, who later became blind.
Rizal and Josephine fell in love with each other at
first sight and after a month they agreed to
marry. But Father Obach, the priest of Dapitan
RIZAL AND refused to marry them without the permission of
Bishop of Cebu.
