• On May 1892, he decided to return
to Manila.
• June 26, 1892 - Arrival in Manila with
sister Lucia and remarked as his
second homecoming
 On July 3,1892, La liga Filipina was
founded, which was A civic league of
Filipinos, which he desired to
established and its role on the
socioeconomic life of the people.
• He presented the Constitution of the
Liga which he had written in Hong
Kong.

On July 6,1892, Rizal went to Malacanan
palace to resume his series of interview with
Spanish Governor General Despujol but the
general suddenly showed him leaflets (Pobres
Frailes) that were against the Dominicans
friars.
Rizal denied having those leaflets and
demand for an investigation.

placed under arrest
and escorted to Fort
Santiago by Ramon
Despujol.

Rizal and its reasons were as follow :
1. Rizal published books and articles which
showed disloyalty to Spain which were
"frankly anti Catholic and prudently anti-
friar.“
2. A few hours after his arrival there were a
bundle of handbills entitled Pobres Frailes
found in his packages.
3. His novel "El Filibusterismo" was dedicated
to the memory of the three traitors.
4. The end to which he pursues in efforts and
writings is to tear from the loyal Filipino the
treasures of our "catholic faith"

 Rizal was exiled in far-away Dapitan, one town in Mindanao,
which was under Jesuits.
 The Steamer Cebu brought Rizal to Dapitan.
 He had multifarious activities. He practiced medicine, pursued

widened his knowledge of languages, established a school for


boys, promoted community projects, invented a wooden
machine for making bricks and engage in farming and
commerce.
 He kept a correspondence with his family, relatives, friends
and scholars of Europe.
• He lived in the house of Commandant, Captain Carnicero. The
relationship between them were friendly. Carnicero gave him freedom
to go anywhere, reporting only once a week and Rizal admired the
kind commandant.

Rizal-Pastells Debate on Religion
• The debate can be read in 4 letters.
• Rizal was bitter against the friars because they
commit abuses under the cloak of religion.
• According to Rizal, individual judgment is a gift

CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENCE
• Rizal, accompanied by his students, explored the coast and forest
of Mindanao.
• They collected specimens of different animals and plants that were
sent to Dresden Museum.
• He also conducted different studies such as ethnographical and
geological studies.

• He continued his studies of languages. He knew 22 languages.
- Tagalog – Ilokano –Subanun - Bisayan – Spanish – Latin

Sanskrit – Dutch- Catalan-Italian – Chinese – Japanese –
Portuguese - Swedish - Russian
RIZAL AS FARMER
• He bought 16 hectares of
land in Talisay.
• He ended up acquiring 70
hectares, containing 6,000

hemp plants, 1,000 coconut
trees and numerous fruit
trees, sugarcane, corn,
coffee and cacao.
• His students helped him in
farm labor and he imported
agricultural machinery from
the US.
RIZAL AS BUSINESSMAN
• He partnered with Ramon Carreon and made
business ventures in fishing, copra and hemp
industries. His most profitable venture was

the hemp industry.
• He organized in January 1895 the
Cooperative Association of Dapitan Farmers.
Its purposes were to improve the farm
products, obtain better outlets for the Dapitan
farmers, collect funds for their purchases,
and help the producers and workers by
establish a store wherein they can buy prime
commodities at moderate prices.
RIZAL AND JOSEPHINE
BRACKEN
• During the lonely days of Rizal due
to Leonor Rivera’s death which left a
void in his heart. In God’s own time,
this “somebody” came to Dapitan
like a sunbeam, to dispel his

melancholy mood.
• She was Josephine Bracken,
“slender, a chestnut blond with blue
eyes, dressed with elegant
simplicity, with an atmosphere of
light gayety”
• She was adopted by Mr. George
Taufer, who later became blind.
Rizal and Josephine fell in love with each other at
first sight and after a month they agreed to
marry. But Father Obach, the priest of Dapitan
RIZAL AND refused to marry them without the permission of
Bishop of Cebu.

JOSEPHINE When Mr. Taufer heard of their projected


BRACKEN marriage, he flared up in violent rage. Unable to
endure the thought of losing Josephine, he tried
to commit suicide by butting off his Throat with a
Lazor. Rizal, however, grabbed his wrists and
prevented him from killing himself.
Rizal and Josephine held hands together and marry themselves before the eyes of
God. They lived as man and wife and lived happily in Dapitan.
