Problem 2

 In a truss member consisting of ISA 80 x 50 x 8 mm is

connected to transmit the working load of 550 kN. This
member is connected to gusset plate of 12 mm thickness
at the back and toe. Design the weld.

ECCENTRIC WELDING
CONNECTION
 Welding connection subjected to combination of shear,
bending and twisting are considered as eccentric welding
connection
 This type of connection is generally used in beam to
column end connection.
Bracket connection
 Bracket means a steel plate or a set of steel plates
connected to columns to support beams.
 The bracket may be connected to a column using butt or
fillet weld
 Bracket plates are used as a platform for another member
to sit/rest on it.
 Welds are subjected to shear force and bending moment
or twisting moment
Bracket
connection using
Butt weld
 Butt weld is subjected to
vertical shear force V = P
and a bending moment
M=P.e
 Consider a bracket connection to flange of a column by a
full penetration butt weld
 Eccentric load P causes shear force P and moment at the
weld section
 Shear stress in the weld due to factored load

 Bending stress in the weld due to factored load

 As per code [ Clause 10.5.10.1 page 80]

 Equivalent stress (fe)

 Where, for E250
