Lesson planning

Start of the lesson How is it ensured that the student feels welcome and safe?
Is there a warm up? Is the homework checked?
5 minutes Does the student have a learning wish for today? If so: does that fit in with the lesson goal?
How is it ensured that the student's knowledge required for this lesson becomes active?

In the beginning of the lesson we will focus mainly on scales and arpeggios, but this time using
double-stops and rolls which are present in the pieces we will play later. This will serve as a
warm-up.

Introduction of the plan How is it ensured that the student understands the purpose of the lesson?
for the lesson Are the skills demonstrated?
___ minutes (in total) How is it ensured that the student understands why the subject matter is important?

Small explanation of the exercises and a overview of the overall path will be explained to the
student in a brief talk.

Learning process How is a safe learning environment ensured?

Which steps or sub-goals lead from what the student can already do to what the student can learn?
25 minutes (in total) Which working methods are used for these steps/sub-goals?
How will it be ensured that the student will soon be able to continue independently at home
without help?

After warming up, we will check if the student has indeed done the stickings for “Bohemian
Rhapsody” and play it through. Depending on the progress regarding this piece, we will either
practice it slowly by sections or speak more about the music itself, so we can relate it closely to
the original version. Following this, I will introduce to the student to the “Avengers” arrangement
which he has been craving for. We will read it through together, as I play the second voice, and, if
there is enough time, we will practice it a bit.

Conclusion How is it checked whether the student has actually understood everything?
5 minutes How is it checked whether the student knows how to develop himself further at home, so what
should be paid attention to during practice?

In the conclusion, I explain where we are in the learning process and I task the student with
figuring out at home all the stickings for the “Avengers” piece.

Homework for the next Only if applicable

lesson

Observation rapport of the lesson - you always fill this in afterwards, also with your own lesson

Short situation sketch What was the atmosphere like during class? How was the room? Were there sufficient
instruments/facilities? How did it feel socially? Were there any personal circumstances on the part
of the teacher or student that might have affected the quality of the lesson?

The student entered the classroom nervous because he had not been able to finish the homework.
As I assessed this, I changed the plan for the lesson by making him finish the stickings before
playing, but without any kind of harsh tone so as to make him feel relaxed. This made it
impossible time-wise to finish the lesson with the “Avengers” piece, which has been postponed for
next lesson. Explaining this consequence to the student made him a little bit sad but I believe that
at the same time will make him more attentive to homework next time.

Skills learned What did you learn from this lesson? What has the student learned? Name cognitive, affective
and/or motor skills if relevant.

Didactic methods used What teaching methods/learning activities have been used?

The main didactic methods are instruction and demonstration with some moments of interaction
through questions

Method(s) and repertoire Which teaching material and teaching materials were ultimately used and in what order? Was
used there a fixed teaching method or was the lesson given more intuitively?
“Bohemian Rhapsody” Freddy Mercury
Marimba
