APM2611 Online/e-tutor Activity1

July 29, 2018

The following online/e-tutoring activities do not count for your year mark.
Their purpose is to guide you to achieve specific outcomes of this module. Post
your answers in the discussion forum ”Solution to Specific DEs”. I have posted
some Tutorials/examples in the ”Additional Resources”, ”Solution to Specific
DEs” folder.

Read the prescribed study material before you attempt these prob-
lems.

1 Question 1
State whether the differential equation is linear or nonlinear, first, second or
third, ordinary or partial.

1.1 yy 0 + 2y = 1 + x2
1.2 x2 dy + (y − xy + ex )dx = 0
d2 y
1.3 dx 2 + 9y = siny

d3 y dy
1.4 x dx3 − dx =0

2 Question 2
Solve the given differential equations. Share with us your thoughts, techniques,
strategies and steps that are required to solve the equations. The following are
the steps I would take to solve the equations (or my thinking patterns):
• What kind is the differential equation? For example, Separable DEs,
Bernouilie, Exact, linear first Order DE, Homogeneous first order DEs,
or equations of the form dy/dx = F (Ax + By + C).

• Does the equation require algebraic manipulation to be solvable?

• Is the equation linear in x or in y? Some equations are solvable when you
choose to solve for x instead of y.
• Which method(s) of solution is applicable? For example, if the equation
is First Order DE, integrating factor method can be applied.

1
• In your own words, explain the method you have chosen in terms of sum-
marised steps. For example, if the method is Separation of Variables, you
can write, Step 1 Re-arrange the equation, Step 2. Integrate both side to
find the solution
• Follow your chosen method to find the solution. Discuss the solutions with
other students
