Douze Mains (2008-2011)

for six players on one grand piano, amplified with two to four microphones

Composed with financial support of Fonds Podiumkunsten

Movements:
I. Doc, it’s only a scratch – part 1
II. What have you done?
III. Take it easy
IV. Doc, it’s only a scratch – part 2
V. Oh yeah

Program notes:
Two great joys in my life are the simple do-it-yourself fun of playing quatre-mains
(especially with my grandfather) and letting myself be surprised again and again
by one of the most creative, quirky and contagious music of the twentieth century:
The White Album by the Beatles. This is my ode to both of them.

Six players are placed around the grand piano like surgeons around the opera-
ting table. The lid of the piano has been taken off. With basic household tools
the musicians operate on the inside of the instrument. The patient responds to the
treatment moaning, giggling and groaning.

Duration:
ca. 11'

Tools:
Player 1: Wooden coffee stick, plastic wire brushes, fingers, (solid plastic) credit
card, flexible (plastified) ID card, hands, pingpong ball

Player 2: Wooden coffee stick, dish brush, nails, one soft and one middle guitar
pick, pingpong ball

Player 3: Wooden coffee stick, dish brush, nails, hand, one middle and one hard
guitar pick, pingpong ball

Player 4: Wooden coffee stick, nails, hard guitar pick, hard (solid plastic) credit
card, flexible (plastified) ID card, hands, two pingpong balls

Player 5: Dish brush, wooden coffee stick, nails, hard felt mallet, middle guitar
pick, pingpong ball

Player 6: Dish brush, plastic wire brushes, wooden coffee stick, hard guitar pick,
nails, hands, one soft and one middle guitar pick, two pingpong balls

DOUZE MAINS

Suggested placement of the microphones

Minimal set-up: two condensator microphones, hanging from high microphone

stands - large enough to go over the players, and not stand inbetween. One
hanging pretty much straight over the middle of the grand piano, the other one
hanging in the middle above the tuning pegs, also picking up the keyboard a
little.

Maximum set-up: one condensator microphone, hanging over the middle of the
grand piano from a high microphone stand - large enough to go over the play-
ers, not stand inbetween - plus three contactmics (AKG C411 or equal): one on
the frame at the end, next to the bassbridge and another two on the frame of the
grand piano, utmost left and utmost right of the tuningpegs.

Scrape with a coffee stick at an angle along the side of one of the double stringed bass strings (usually between
G subcontra and G contra). Scrape with one finger close to the string and apply a lot of pressure to the stick to produce
soft and subtle moaning sounds and avoid purely metallic (and loud) scraping sounds as much as possible
