Politics And The English Language

Why and how does Orwell correlate politics with the English language?
He believes that modern English has become worse and that the main causes are politics and
economics.

Define politics.
The activities of the government, members of law-making organizations, or people who try to influence
the way a country is governed.

Why does the author use a pseudonym?

His real name was Eric Blair. I found out he didn't like his name. He also feared that he would embarrass
his family. George Orwell had his own life, separated from Eric Blair. Another reason was that Orwell
wanted a name that began with a letter that is in the middle of the alphabet. So his books will be in the
middle of the bookshelf. Not too high, where customers do not see theem, and not too low, where they
would be at the feet of customers.

In my opinion, another reason is that in the essay, George says that every writer who thinks more clearly
takes the first step towards political regeneration and language improvement. This person (who is
neither a machine nor a dummy) is some kind of rebel. Therefore, Orwell is clearly considered as a rebel
and maybe that’s the reason to hide his identity.

What did you expect from the essay based on its title?
I expected it to be about the history of the English language and the connection of the language and
political activities.

What do you think is the purpose of the essay?

The writer lets us know that the English language is in a bad way and that works for politics. The
language is full of bad habits, and has become the mixture of vagueness and sheer incompetence. When
they use scientific phraseology full of fly-blown metaphors, the harsh truth is covered (euphemism).
Orvel wants to show us how to use better language using the 6 rules at the end of the essay(it has
nothing to do with archaism).
