ISSUE PROBLEM

To investigate the impact of covid-19 on Mr. Thompson community shop in Middlesex, Hanover
during the periods June- august 2021

OBJECTIVES:
1. To find out his customer flow during the period stated.
2. To determine if his sale pattern has seen an increase in the last 3 months.
3. To identify the benefits of having his shop in the community.
BACKGROUND

Mr. Thompson, a sole trader, operates a community shop located in Middlesex, Hanover. He
usually employs one person to work at alternate times. He offers to the public meat and grocery
items such as; meat, eggs, bread, beverages, chips etc. And household items; floor polish, bleach,
bath and fabric soaps, clothes pin etc. He decided to launch out his own business because he was
snow retired. At that time around, there weren’t enough grocery shops to serve the community
and to save them the time of going at a distance to purchase goods. He also thought of the idea of
building his shop by his house, so it could be easier for him to watch and operate his business
perfectly as he gets older. He has been running this business for approximately 9years. One of
the biggest challenges he faced when he was starting up the business was getting the goods, he
needed intact. He also mentioned that he has further vision for his shop, which is to expand and
hopefully to add other needful commodities. According to his actions he is a very generous
person in the community. He contributed crates of beer and other items to one of his regular
customers that had passed away grave’s digging in 2021. The benefits that this business teaches
me as a student studying principles of business is one; it teaches the meaning entrepreneurship
and how it displays in a person. It also shows me what it takes, the determination, the mindset
and creativity. After speaking with Mr. Thompson, he left with me some encouraging words
about starting a business, he said that it takes a while to start money, but with self-motivation,
help and dedication you will reach where you want to go.
METHODOLOGY

The two methods the researcher used to collect data were: questionnaire and an interview
schedule. One advantage of why a questionnaire was chosen is because it reaches the audience
quickly. And one advantage of why an interview schedule was chosen is because you're able to
capture the person you're talking to emotions and behaviors in real time. For the research 15
copies questionnaire with 8 closed-ended and 4 open-ended questions, each were printed and
issued to the community of Middlesex. For the interview schedule there will be questions that I
will ask the owner at his where the shop is located on a weekend. Two limitations took place
within this process; three questionnaires weren’t complete. The owner did not have a lot to say
about his business history.
