and thirst for righteousness, but find ourselves feeling empty. We grieve in
seasons of loss, feeling hopeless and lost. We want to show mercy, but we
hold on to old resentments. We want to make peace, but we don’t even know
where to begin. Come with your wisdom and guide us in your ways. Renew
us and inspire us to live faithfully, as you walk beside us. Amen.

*Words of Grace and Mercy

From generation to generation, God’s love overcomes human sinfulness. God is
committed to fresh starts and new creations. This is good news!
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

*Prayer Response
(Hymn 327, stanza 3)
Eternal are thy mercies, Lord; eternal truth attends thy word:
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore,
till suns shall rise and set no more.

Anthem Offertory John Ness Beck

With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high?
Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, shall I come before Him with
yearling calves? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten
thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give Him my firstborn for my transgressions, the
fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O man; He has
shown you what is good. And what does the Lord require of you but to do
justice and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6: 6-8)

*Benediction and Blessing
Franz Liszt used this melody for a “Crusaders’ March” in an oratorio, but this hymn had nothing to do with
the Crusades. No record of the German text exists before the middle of the 17th century or of the Silesian
folk melody before the first half of the 19th century.

Annual Meeting

Gather with the congregation in the sanctuary immediately after

worship on Feb. 5th for the Annual Congregational Meeting. Hear
reports from church leadership and vote on our new slate of members
for boards and committees.

Sponsor Flowers for Sunday!

Announcing an opportunity to sponsor flowers for a

Sunday service. This has been true forever but since it
is the beginning of a new year, we want to bring it to
your attention again. You may sign up to
have flowers placed on the altar in honor of or in
memory of a loved one. While you may bring in a
bouquet and place it on the altar yourself,
the alternative is to pay $35 and a member of the
flower committee will purchase the flowers and
arrange them for the altar.

For the next few Sundays, Candy will be available during coffee hour with a sign-up
sheet and to answer any questions. Later, we will coordinate with Mahdia if it is easier
for you to contact her.

Tuesday Bible Study

In the new year, we continue our study of the Book of Genesis,
picking up at chapter 12 where we meet Father Abraham and get
introduced to the great patriarchs of old. Join us on Zoom every
other Tuesday night at 7:30pm for this six-part study of Genesis,
starting on January 24th. Visit the website or contact Mahdia in the
Church Office at mahdia@firstchurchevanston.org for details on
how to get involved.
