ACTIVITY 2
GYROSCOPIC INSTRUMENT MOCK-UP
(TURN-AND-SLIP AND HEADING INDICATOR)

Gyroscopes, or gyros, have made it possible to fly an aircraft without outside visual reference.
A gyro is simply a rotating mass; a familiar example is a child's top. Gyroscopes have unique
behaviors which make them useful in aircraft instruments.

The heading indicator is fundamentally a mechanical

instrument designed to facilitate the use of the magnetic
compass. Errors in the magnetic compass are numerous,
making straight flight and precision turns to headings
difficult to accomplish, particularly in turbulent air. A
heading indicator, however, is not affected by the forces
that make the magnetic compass difficult to interpret

Turn indicators measure the rate of rotation of an

aircraft about its vertical axis. The basic difference
between these rate-of-turn indicators and attitude and
heading indicators is in the mounting of the gyro itself.
The gyroscopic turn and slip indicator was the first
"blind flight" instrument invented. It has been known
by a number of names including "needle and ball" and
"turn and bank indicator."

DIRECTION:
Follow the instructions for every step on the box and always wear your PPE during the whole
shop activity. Write the date and time on the box of each steps and mark check (✔) for each
material or equipment that you’re going to use for your shop activity, signed each step before
submitting your activity to your instructor.

*Note: There will be a DEMERIT or deduction of points for each time that you are not
following the instruction, procedures, steps, not wearing of safety equipment and improper
working procedure.

OBJECTIVES:
 To build an instrument mock-up (heading indicator and turn-and slip indicator)

 To familiarize how an instrument works

 To exercise proper wearing of P.P.E.’s during activities

Step 1. Prepare the required P.P.E

(Mark ✔ the P.P.E needed for the activity)

 Gloves ______
 Goggles ______
 Apron ______

Step 2. Gather the tools and materials that will be used.

 PVC pipe
 Sheet metal
 Illustration board/Foam board
 Gauge glass
 Aviation snip
 Hacksaw
 File (Round file and Half-round file)
 Glue/ Adhesives
Step 3. Use a cylindrical pipe that will show internal
components and mechanisms of the aircraft
instruments.

Step 4. Gather pictures or illustrations to copy the

actual appearance of the instrument.

Step 5. You may use illustration board or sheet metal

for creating mini gyroscopes for the instruments. On
the other end of the gauge show the heading or turn
and slip indicator gauge with a pointer.
