UNITY
Unity in writing is the connection of all ideas to a single topic. In an essay, all ideas should relate to the
thesis statement, and the supporting ideas in a main body paragraph should relate to the topic
sentence. Read the paragraph of essay below about Chinese medicine. Then do these tasks.

Editing an essay for unity

One way to keep unity in an essay is to edit the outline for ideas that are not relevant to the thesis
statement or topic sentences, as you have learned before. Likewise, after you have written the essay, it
is helpful to review the text and look for ideas that do not relate to the thesis or the topic sentences.

Task: Read the thesis statement and the main body paragraphs below. The writer has crossed out
some sentences that do not belong to. There is still one large piece of the text that should be
removed because it isn’t relevant to the thesis. What you havw to do are:
1. Retyping the whole paragraph on a separate page below.
2. Cross out some sentences that are not relevant to the thesis statement.
3. Then compare your answers with a partner.
