Contaminant Hydrogeology

(1) Lecture: Prof. Deqiang Mao

(2) Credit and teaching hours: 2 credits, 32 hours

(3) Contents:
Groundwater plays an important role in supplying drinking, agricultural and
industrial water. However, groundwater is susceptible to pollutants. Understanding
the mechanisms of contaminant movement is vital for efficient water resource
management and remediation. In this course, we will emphasize the basic concepts
of transport, retardation, and attenuation of a variety of contaminants in
groundwater. Contaminated site characterization methods and risk assessment
methods will be discussed as well. Numerical methods for simulating the advection
dispersion equation will also be covered. The course including:
Chapter 1: Overview of contamination in soil and groundwater (1 class hours)
Chapter 2: Basics of subsurface hydrology (3 class hours)
Chapter 3: Nonreactive solute transport (4 class hours)
Chapter 4: Contaminant interactions and reactive transport (4 class hours)
Chapter 5: Contaminant site investigation (4 class hours)
Chapter 6: Risk assessment of groundwater contamination (2 class hours)
Chapter 7: Soil and groundwater remediation (4 class hours)
Chapter 8: Contamination and remediation case studies (2 class hours)
Chapter 9: Modeling of contaminant transport (4 class hours)
(4) Cultivating Objective:
Students should be able to master the basic theory of solute transport and advection
dispersion equation, and can use the relevant theory to analyze real world
contaminant problems and propose efficient remediation designs.

(5) Time of the class:
