Question 1:

Chart and Figure

Looking at the values, the Eoc(V) values are larger for PEMFC than SOFC because, in
PEFMC, hydrogen is diffused and reacts with oxygen. In the SOFC, hydrogen reacts
directly with oxygen. Therefore, more energy is released in PEMFC than in SOFC,
resulting in higher Eoc (V) values.

Resistance is directly proportional to electrolyte thickness and inversely proportional to

ionic conductivity. Therefore, SOFC’s electrolyte is denser since they contained more
oxygen ions compared to PEFMC. This results in higher ionic conductivity in the SOFC
meaning the resistance would be smaller in SOFC than in PEFMC.

The “A” value is proportional to the energy released. Since more energy is released in
PEFMC compared to in SOFC, the A value of PEMFC is higher than SOFC.

The m value is lower in PEFMC than in SOFC due to the higher ionic density of SOFC.
This meant that resistance is smaller, indicating that the potential difference is larger in
the SOFC. Therefore, the m value in SOFC is higher than that of the PEFMC.

The n value of both PEFMC and SOFC are similar because the product of both FC’s
A*m is similar.
