- They are substances used to sedate without inducing sleep and used
to relieve anxiety, excitement and restlessness.
- Two categories: Normal and pathological and are treated by the same
drugs
- Tranquilizers are only taken by a prescription

Chlorodiazepoxide Librium® Muscle rigidity, coma and death
ANTI-DEPRESSANTS
They are used for treating depression.
 Typical symptoms of depression are continuous sadness, loss of interest
and pleasure in activities, crying spells, emotional lability, feeling guilt,
worthless and hopelessness.
 The most used anti-depressants are the barbiturates like Segonal®,
Amital®, Prozac® and Tofranil®.
 The overdose effects of barbiturates are unconsciousness, coma,
respiratory paralysis and death.
