Exercise 5
Statistical Concepts and Tools
I. Binomial Distribution
1. Make a survey of 10 families with four (4) children in your campus.
2. Indicate the number of boys and girls in each family.
3. Tabulate your results together with the other members of the class and fill up Table 1.
Table 1: Distribution and chi-square test of sexes in families of 4 children (class data)
Observed # of Expected # of Deviation (d) d2/expected
families families
All boys (b4) 1 3 2 1.33
Total 45 45 3.62
1. Using the binomial equation and Chi-square test, determine if the family distribution in
your sample is consistent with the hypothesis of equal number of boys and girls. Use
the Chi-square table found in the appendix.
Degree of freedom 4
Conclusion Null hypothesis will be accepted because the chi computed is less than
the chi tabulated or the critical value.

II. Biometry
1. Measure in mm the length and broadest width of the fifth leaf (the lowermost
leaf is the first) of three (3) red ginger (Alpinia purpurata) or any species of
plants with simple leaves grown under similar environmental conditions.
2. Gather the data of the other groups and fill up Tables 2 and 3.
3. Solve the variance and standard deviation using the formulae given below.
𝑥2− 𝑥2(𝑛) ̅ )2

𝑠 = 𝑛−1 or 𝑠 =∑

X = 71.57
s = 13.67
s2 = 186.90
4. Prepare histograms to show distribution of length and width of the leaves. You may use the
back page for additional space.
