Work, Energy, and Power

1) A 6-kg object has a speed of 2m/s at point A and 4m/s later at point B. Find the total work
done on the object as it moves from point A to B.

Given: SOL’N: Total work:

m = 6 -kg KE = mv2/2 W = ΔKE
VA = 2 m/s KEA = 6(2)2 /2 W = 48J – 12J
VB = 4 m/s = 12 J Wk= 36 J
KEB = 6(4)2 /2
= 48 J

2) A 1650−kg fast car can accelerate from 0 to 27m/s in 2.7s.

Given: Vf = 27 m/s
m = 1650 −kg t = 2.7s
Vi = 0

(a) What is its acceleration?

Vt−Vi

= 10 m/s2
(b) What is the displacement of the car?

d = 36.45 m

(c) How much work was done on the car?

W = Fd
F = ma
2
W =(1650 kg × 10 m/s )¿ 6.45 m)
W = 601 425 J

(d) What is the average force acting on the car over this time interval?
F = ma
F = (1650 kg) (10 m/s2)
=16 500 N
