NATURE OF MATHEMATICS:
MATHEMATICS IN OUR WORLD

LESSON 1
Patterns and Numbers in Nature
and the World
LEARNING OUTLINES
1. Define Mathematics
2. Appreciate the Nature of Math
3. Identify Patterns in Nature and the World
MATHEMATICS IS…
NATURE OF MATHEMATICS
Getting to know Mathematics
✓ What is it?
✓ Where is it?
✓ What is it for?
✓ How it is done?
✓ Who uses Mathematics?
✓ Why is it important to
learn or know?
WHAT IS MATHEMATICS?
• It is formal system of thought for recognizing, classifying, and exploiting
of patterns.

What is Maths about?

• Numbers, symbols, Notations
• Operations, Equations, functions
• Process and thingification of processes.
WHERE IS MATHEMATICS?
•It is every where..
WHAT IS IT FOR?
• To help us unravel the puzzle of nature, a useful way to
think about nature.
• Organize patterns and regularities as well as irregularities.
• To help us control the effect of weather and epidemics
• Provides new questions to think about.
HOW IS MATHEMATICS DONE?
• With Curiosity
• With eagerness for seeking patterns and generalizations
• With desire to know the truth
• With trial and error
• Without fear of facing more questions and problems
WHO USES MATHEMATICS?
•Mathematicians: pure and applied
•Scientist : natural and social
•Practically EVERYONE
WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW?
•It puts order in disorder.
•It helps us become better persons
•It helps us make the world a better place
to live on.

WHAT ARE PATTERNS?
• These are “observable” regular, repeated or recurring
forms or designs.
• It is an arrangement which helps observers anticipate what
might see or happen next.
• Natural patterns include: symmetries, trees, spirals,
meanders, waves, foams, tessellations, cracks and stripes.
PATTERNS INDICATES SENSE OF STRUCTURES AND ORGANIZATIONS
TO PRODUCE CREATIVE AND AMAZING FORMATIONS:

SYMMETRY – indicates that you can

draw an imaginary lines across an object
and the resulting parts are mirror images of
each other.
PATTERNS INDICATES SENSE OF STRUCTURES AND ORGANIZATIONS
TO PRODUCE CREATIVE AND AMAZING FORMATIONS:

FRACTALS – same patterns that

occurs again and again at different
size and scales
PATTERNS INDICATES SENSE OF STRUCTURES AND ORGANIZATIONS
TO PRODUCE CREATIVE AND AMAZING FORMATIONS:

MEANDERS – a winding curve or

bend of a river or road
- one of a series of regular sinuous
curves in the channel of a river or
other watercourse.
PATTERNS INDICATES SENSE OF STRUCTURES AND ORGANIZATIONS
TO PRODUCE CREATIVE AND AMAZING FORMATIONS:

TESSELLATION – patterns
that are formed by repeated
cubes or tiles.
PATTERNS INDICATES SENSE OF STRUCTURES AND ORGANIZATIONS
TO PRODUCE CREATIVE AND AMAZING FORMATIONS:

SPIRAL – shapes that wind in

a gradually or tightening curve.
PATTERNS INDICATES SENSE OF STRUCTURES AND ORGANIZATIONS
TO PRODUCE CREATIVE AND AMAZING FORMATIONS:

FOAM – object formed by

trapping of gas in liquid or solid.
PATTERNS INDICATES SENSE OF STRUCTURES AND ORGANIZATIONS
TO PRODUCE CREATIVE AND AMAZING FORMATIONS:

STRIPE – long narrow band or

strip, typically of the same
width throughout its length,
differing in color or texture from
the surface on either side of it.
❑ used to identify relationships,
PATTERNS CAN BE..
❑ used to find logical connections
to form generalizations,
❑ used to make predictions.

PATTERNS: LOGIC
WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING FIGURES CAN BE USED
TO CONTINUE THE SERIES GIVEN BELOW?
WHICH OF THE FIGURES CAN BE USED TO
CONTINUE THE SERIES GIVEN BELOW?

PATTERNS: NUMBER
What number comes next?
3, 5, 7, 9, __ 7, 6, 4, 1, __

5, 6, 8, 11, __ 3, 6, 12, 24, __

PATTERNS: GEOMETRIC
PATTERNS: WORDS / LETTERS
Knife : Knives

Life : Lives
