EDU: 552 Supervision and Evaluation

October 22, 2022

I always initially script lessons and generally try to focus on predetermined look-fors established
with the teacher. These could be student production behviors, student data, or teacher
behviors. Since that wasn’t possible watching a lesson on the web, I just wrote down everything
I noticed. I color coded between the “script”, teacher moves, and questions or areas for
consideration.

Summative Comprehensive Evaluation Form

Based on Formal Observation, Pre and Post Observation

Conferences and Overall Professional Practice, as outlined
in Marzano’s Art and Science of Teaching Teacher
Evaluation Model

Routine Events: Student responses and behavior throughout the lesson

indicated a clear understanding of expectations and instructional routines
(e.g. recitation of the Learning Target, answering in unison to teacher’s
questions, gum incident). Instructional routines were also explained
throughout the lesson and explicitly referenced by the teacher.

Addressing Content: Teacher demonstrated a clear understanding and use of

content through identifying essential questions and connecting them to the
Learning Target, as well as through the selection of texts and text dependent
questions asked during the activity. Questions were written on the board.
Further demonstration was provided while conferencing with individual
student groups as she engaged in probing questions and provided individual
responses and suggested scaffolding, (e.g. asked one group to find literary
elements chart).

Enacted on the Spot: Multiple teacher moves were enacted on the spot in
response to student needs and questions: a.) Cold calls were used as an
instructional strategy to elicit student engagement from a variety of
individuals and check for understanding. b.)Connected purpose of previous
lessons for individual groups while checking for understanding. c.)Uses
probing questions to deepen student’s critical thinking in connecting
multiple textual themes. d.)Explained directions and expectations for
culminating activity multipl times. e.) Many examples of teacher providing
positive feedback and encouragement to students. Teacher and students
clearly established a safe learning environment where students are able to
clarify directions and engage in productive discourse for the purpose of the
lesson.

Planning and Preparing: Multiple elements of the lesson indicate planning

and preparation: a.)Connection of essential questions and learning target
indicate attention to scope and sequence. b.)Preplaned and written questions
with some consideration of potential misunderstandings. c.)Vocabulary
review with predetermined literary elements. d.)Review of summarizing:key
details, text evidence, and academic vocabulary. e.)Connected lessons that
supported students in analyzing multiple texts and applying their knowledge
of literary concepts.

Reflecting on Teaching: N/A

Collegiality and Professionalism: N/A

Total Score Rating: N/A at this time, as this is not a summative evaluation.

Summary Commendations: Teacher, Thanks for letting me join your class

today! You started the lesson by identifying your essential question and
the short-term learning target. This is so important in orienting yourself
and your students in the learning progression. Further evidence of your
thoughfulness in planning were the text dependent questions you asked
during the lesson. These really got your students thinking and the hum of the
room during your lesson showed how engaged they were in the work as well
as the positive classroom culture that you have clearly established. Your
individual connections with each group were also noteworthy. You
successfully utilized multiple teacher moves that included: checks for
understanding, referencing support materials for scaffolding, and
scripted language. Above all, the sequence of your lesson clearly walked
students through the complex task of developing a common theme
throughout multiple texts and helped them to engage in higher order
thinking skills. Please choose one of the following recommendations you’d
like to discuss further or that is most relevant to your professional goals this
year. I look forward to talking with you at the post conference. As always, feel
free to reach out with any questions or concerns in the meantime.

Recommendations:1.) Draw explicit connections between the LT and EQ;

Review first 3 minutes of video. 2.)Consider how you might structure your
written questions to be more concise and direct; Examine the difference
between the way you structured your written questions and the language
you used while checking in with individual groups. 3.) When it came time to
complete the poster, students spent a significant amount of time clarifying
what to do vs. how to develop their understanding of the content. How could
you use success criteria to shift the focus of their questions? Review last five
3-5 minutes of the lesson.

Comments: Please choose one of the following recommendations you’d like
