Math 201 Course Syllabus T2 AY 2021-22
Course Description:
This course equips the students with the mathematical skills and meets the cognitive and
practical requirements of post-secondary or higher education studies in a variety of disciplines
such as Sciences, Medicine, and IT. It raises their awareness of the importance of Maths and
adapts to the student’s overall development. Students are expected to interpret and analyse
problems and generate strategies to solve these individually and in groups. This component is
compulsory for all GFP7 students. The learning outcomes are based upon Set 1:
Course Objectives:
1. Identify the correct order to carry out the different arithmetic operations
2. Able to tell the meaning of square roots and cube roots of numbers
3. Solve a quantity of a fraction into lowest terms
4. Demonstrate conversions of fractions to decimals and percentages and vice-versa
5. Demonstrate the conversions Units of Measurement, Imperial and Standard International Units
6. Round off approximation of decimal places and significant figures
7. State the different roles played by letter symbols in algebra and use the correct notation in
deriving algebraic expressions
8. Able to solve simple or linear equations containing brackets and fractions. Solve linear equations
in which the unknown appears on both sides of the equations
9. Recognise an algebraic formula from the information given
10. Distinguish various types of angles and their measurement
11. Identify an unknown side of a right-angled triangle –using Pythogaras’ theorem. Use sine, cosine
and tangent to find unknown lengths in right-angled triangles
12. Recognise an angle of elevation and depression
Learning Outcome:
On successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Describe the set of real numbers, all its subsets and their relationships.
Identify and use the arithmetic properties of subsets of integers, rational, irrational, and real
numbers, including closure properties for the four basic arithmetic operations where applicable.
Round off approximation of decimal places and significant figures.
Convert one unit of measurement to another.
Demonstrate an understanding of the exponent laws, and apply them to simplify expressions and
manipulate fractions, ratios, decimals and percentages.
Solve linear equations, equations involving radicals, fractional expressions and inequalities.
Translate worded problems into mathematical expression. Use substitution to work out the value
of an expression.
Generate formulae to change the subject of formulae.
Measure various types of angles and their measurement.
Use trigonometric, to find right-angled (Pythagoras), sine, cosine and tangent of an angle.
Solve right angle triangles using angle of elevation and depression.
Apply knowledge of basic algebra and trigonometry in real life problems.
Demonstrate study skills ability in time management and responsibility .
