Antony Mutua graduated from Mombasa Polytechnic University College with an idea to create a shoe that can charge phones through energy generated from walking. He developed a thin strip of crystals that produce electricity under pressure from steps. The shoe charger allows the user to charge their phone while walking or after via a cable or stored energy in the crystals. His innovation was presented in 2012 and patented that year. He now runs a company selling the charging shoes locally in Kenya for $29. The business is growing with more investors as he has overcome initial challenges in securing funds.

hi everybody I am very happy to be here today because I am going to present you a very
special person whose name is Antony Mutua he is a graduate of Mombasa Polytechnic
University College. and after is graduation he had an amazing idea which ways to create a shoe text charges phones a shoe that you could charge your phone with and no idea and very few materials very few friends very few money but a lot of works, he managed to to develop and ultra-thin ship of crystals that would generate electricity when put under pressure. how it works is as you walk you generate pressure which generates energy in the shoe charger which you can then use to charge a mobile phone. and this electricity can be harvested in two ways firstly you can charge your phone while still in motion trough a thin extension cable that runs from the shoe to the pockets the other way is to charge the phone immediately after you walked because the Crystals have the capacity to store the electric energy. in 2012 his innovation was presented during the innovation week taking place at the Kenya International Conference Centre in Nairobi. and the technology was patented this same year which means nobody can't copy is technology. he is now at the head of an early stage company which is not making big profits but still manage to put the charging shoe on local the market the price of $29. is company is now working pretty well you did not run out of business and he's attracting more and more investors. already has overcome the biggest optical which was securing funds and now is business is growing. he was in 2016 the monk Africa's top 100 influential youths but I think he deserves more than that for three reasons. he managed to convert an idea into a business, is innovation will impacts not only Africa but also the rest of the world and the scientific field related to renewable energy, and finally he has proven to other Africans, to all the African entrepreneurs that is possible in Africa to innovate and turn things around. this is why I am nominating him for the African innovation awards. he has achieved the river, he know has to achieve the sea, congratulations to him and I wish him all the best in the future and I am looking forward to seeing his product reaching the European market. thank you very much for listening to me and I wish you a very nice afternoon. thank you
