REFLECTION #2

Upon reading the module unit 2 entitled “Ethics x Culture” the thing that strikes me the most is the topic
about culture relativism based on the module culture relativism is the view that moral beliefs and
practices vary with and depend on the human needs and social conditions of particular cultures
(Holmes,2007) In my perspective, the moral behavior or one person can only be accepted or understood
by the society he or she lives in if the moral behavior they showing is accepted by the culture they lived
in. For example, the way a person dress is different, for instance, a girl who grew up in a culture that they
are not allowed to wear something that is too short, just like in province or a muslim so her society is
expecting her to wear something modest, if she would be wearing shorts, mini skirts or sleeveless it wont
be accepted on the people around her because it is different for them. ACulture is subjective each person
can have different view on a thing, because we live in a different type of culture. That’s why culture
relativism should be understood be established in everyone, because here we can appreciate each and
everyone’s culture difference. In my perspective, culture relativism is the answer to inequality, racism and
etc.. Because it promotes relativism, it can make us united, if culture relativism will be established in
every individual the world would be a better place. But as said in the last part of the module, we must be
reminded that cultural relativism should not, in any way be used as an excuse to continue cultural
practices that can cause harm to a person. It shouldn’t violate the human rights.
