MS. ALCAZAR, ANGELICA

The history of mankind is a never-ending story of change, revolution, and evolution - but surely no span
of a hundred years can claim to have changed the world so dramatically,
rapidly or so irreversibly as the Twentieth Century.
At the start of the twentieth century the map of the world was colored to illustrate the pervasiveness of
the great European empires. Everywhere, from China in the east to all but a couple of countries in
Europe,
ancient dynasties wore their crowns in apparent security.
None of that survived the next one hundred years. But change does not come in on the wind.
Change proceeds from events - a political row, an assassination, a natural disaster, a human error or
stroke of genius. Great changes flow from such events. The most tumultuous events of the twentieth
century altered the world on a scale unprecedented in human history.

IN THIS SERIES WE EXAMINE THE 101 EVENTS (88-74) WHICH IN THE JUDGMENT OF
EXPERTS INCLUDING THOSE WHO CONTRIBUTE TO THE SERIES MOST
INFLUENTIALLY SHAPED THE CENTURY, OUR WORLD, AND OUR WAY OF LIFE.
It was October 1, 1971 when guests were first allowed into the “Happiest
Place on Earth.” The resort was the brainchild of Walt Disney himself, but
he died four years before the park opened. His brother, Roy Disney, came
out of retirement to oversee the construction of the park and presided over
the official opening.

The Walt Disney Company is showing expansion and growth in

both the American and global economy. Disney's net
income increased 21 percent over the previous year with this
years total at 4.8 billion dollars. Revenue increased 7 percent
from the previous year and was at a record high of 40.9 billion
dollars.

There were three such wars: the First Carlist War (1833-1840), the Second
Carlist War (1846-1849), and the Third Carlist War (1872-1876).

The main cause of the Spanish Civil War, was the failure of
Spanish democracy. This was because there was a refusal by
the Spanish parties and groups to compromise and respect
democratic norms.
The war has lasted two years and 254 days; as many as one
million lives have been lost, either directly through combat or
as a result of privation. Franco establishes a dictatorship that
would endure until his death on November 20, 1975.

The Nationalist party achieved victory after capturing Madrid. As a

result, a dictatorship ruled the country for nearly 40 years after the
war was over. From 1939 until he died in 1975, Francisco Franco
ruled over Spain.

public unrest.

Silent Spring is an environmental science book by Rachel Carson. The
book was published on September 27, 1962, documenting the adverse
environmental effects caused by the indiscriminate use of pesticides.
Author: Rachel Carson
Subjects: Pesticides, ecology, environmentalism
Published: September 27, 1962

Silent Spring was met with fierce opposition by chemical companies, but it
spurred a reversal in national pesticide policy, led to a nationwide ban on
DDT for agricultural uses, and inspired an environmental movement that
led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Carson's book promoted a paradigm shift in how chemists practice

their discipline and helped to establish a new role for chemists in
investigating the impact of human activity on the environment.

The “Jonestown Massacre” occurred on November 18, 1978, when more
than 900 members of an American cult called the Peoples Temple died in a
mass suicide-murder under the direction of their leader Jim Jones (1931-78).

In the 1970s, following negative media attention, the powerful,

controlling preacher moved with some 1,000 of his followers to
the Guyanese jungle, where he promised they would establish a
utopian community.

On November 18, 1978, U.S. Representative Leo Ryan, who

had gone to Jonestown to investigate claims of abuse, was
murdered along with four members of his delegation.

That same day, Jones ordered his followers to ingest poison-

laced punch while armed guards stood by.

1964: If anyone should be credited with pioneering the miniskirt it is British
designer Mary Quant. ... Inspired by the fashions she saw on the streets,
Quant raised the hemline of her skirts in 1964 to several inches above the
knee, and the iconic miniskirt was born. She named the skirt after her
favorite car, the Mini.

The designer Mary Quant was quoted as saying that "short

short skirts" indicated youthfulness which was seen as
desirable, fashion-wise.

Quant changed the way we view femininity when she

designed the fashion sensation in the 60s — and shaped
the image of young, modern, self-aware women

The Marshall Plan, also known as the European Recovery Program, was a
U.S. program providing aid to Western Europe following the devastation of
World War II. It was enacted in 1948 and provided more than $15 billion to
help finance rebuilding efforts on the continent.

U.S. Secretary of State George Marshall, who laid out

the Marshall Plan, believed that the stability of European
governments depended on the economic stability of the
people.

By the time the Marshall Plan ended, in 1951, all the

countries who received aid saw their economies grow to
better than prewar levels.

that was completed in New York City in 1931 and was the tallest building in
the world.
The world's most famous office building, a historical
landmark, and was named "America's Favorite Architecture" in
a poll conducted by the American Institute of Architects. It's no
surprise that visiting this amazing building is one of the top
places to visit in New York.

Opening in the midst of the Great Depression, the building

lifted the spirits of American citizens, even though its
owners had rented only 25% of the 2 million feet (609,600
m) of office space available. In fact, they wouldn't achieve
full occupancy until the late 1940s.

The 1956 Suez Crisis, when Britain along with France and Israel invaded
Egypt to recover control of the Suez Canal, was arguably one of the most
significant episodes in post-1945 British history. Its outcome highlighted
Britain's declining status and confirmed it as a 'second tier' world power.

The Suez Canal was constructed in 1869 allowing faster

sea transport to India, which increased Britain's long-
standing strategic interest in the Eastern Mediterranean. ...
Britain retained control of finance and foreign affairs and
maintained a garrison to secure the Suez Canal.

Nasser emerged from the Suez Crisis a victor and a hero

for the cause of Arab and Egyptian nationalism. Israel did
not win freedom to use the canal, but it did regain shipping
rights in the Straits of Tīrān.

The 11th Summer Olympic Games, held in August 1936 in Berlin, Germany,
provided the entire world a lesson on the danger of politicizing sports. Those
Games became a political vehicle for the Nazi Party and Germany's dictator,
Adolf Hitler.

The 1936 Olympics were held in a tense, politically charged

atmosphere

Nazi Germany used the 1936 Olympic Games for

propaganda purposes. The Nazis promoted an image of a
new, strong, and united Germany while masking the
