SCIENCE ACTIVITY SHEET VIII_14.

To distinguish between good and poor conductors of electricity.

Activity: ______________________________________________________________

Material Provided: Lemon Juice, Vinegar, Milk, Honey, Sugar Solution, Distilled water, Tap
water, insulated copper wire, battery, bulb, beaker(4 to 5), Tray , cotton/tissues etc.

Here is what you do……

1. Pour enough lemon juice into the beaker.

2. Cut two pieces of copper wire, each about a 30cm in length. Make a tester by connecting a
battery and a bulb.
3. Dip the free ends of the tester into lemon juice as shown in the figure.
4. Observe the changes occurring in the bulb of the tester.
5. Wipe the tips of the copper wire clean and dry using a tissue or cotton.
6. Repeat the process with Vinegar, Salt solution, sugar solution, Honey, Milk etc.

Observations:

Bulb Glows Good Conductor/Weak

S.No. Liquids used for the exp.

Conclusion:
Some liquids are good conductors of electricity and some are poor conductors of electricity.

Precautions:

1. While connecting various elements of the circuit ensure that the connections are tight.
2. The ends of the tester should be dry while dipping into different solutions/liquids.
3. The ends of the tester should not touch each other.

Questions:

1. What is an electrolyte?
An electrolyte is a substance that dissociates in water into charged particles called ions. Positively charged ions

are called cations. Negatively charged ions are called anions.

2. Name a device which glows even when a weak electric current passes through it.
LED (Light Emmitting diode)
Ans: _______________________________________________________________

Do it Yourself:
Using the same setup in place of battery use a potato or lemon to make your own potato cell or
lemon cell.
Check which vegetable conducts electricity better.
