The paleolithic cave of
Kastritsa
The occupation of the site intensiied after 14.000 B.C., that is after the
greatest expansion of the last Ice Age (Last Glacial Maximum) and
the beginning of the gradual melting of the ice – cap.
Kastritsa is strategically located to provide access to alternative
nutritional or other resources. The importance of the site is relected
in the thickness of the cultural deposits- nine meters- the excavation
of which yielded hundreds of thousands of material remains (artifacts
and animal remains).
Pottery collected from the foothills and a cave on the north end
of the hill, attest for the development of agricultural and husbandry
activities in the area during the Early – Middle and Final Neolithic.
According to typological criteria,
the sherds with impressed and
incised decoration collected
from a drainage ditch at the
eastern foothills of Kastritsa are
dated to the earlier period. The
vessels from the cave belong to
the Final Neolithic. The cave is not
accessible to the public.
Ο λόφος της Καστρίτσας από ανατολικά / The hill of Kastritsa from the east
cially after the mid – 3rd c. B.C., during the years of the Epirote Alliance
and Epirote League. Its prosperity lasted until 168/167 B.C. when the city
was besieged by the roman legions of Aemilius Paulus. This was an act
of punishment for the help offered by the Molossians to the Macedonian
King Perseus, during the 3rd Macedonian War. Despite its destruction,
the city was not abandoned. Repairs of the fortiication wall along with
modiications of the buildings, testify that the location continued to be
inhabited during the Roman and early Christian times, until the 6th c. A.D.
Due to the absence of epigraphic or other archaeological evidence,
we do not know the ancient name of the fortiied city at Kastritsa. Dakaris,
following Livy’s narration (XLV, 26), identiied the city with Tekmon, a site
occupied – second after Passaron – by the roman legions as they were
advancing southwards, from Illyria to Epirus. Hammond identiied the
fortiied hilltop with Euryimenai, a city mentioned by Diodoros Sikeliotis and
other sources. Irrespective of its ancient name, the impressive fortiication
enclosure, the large size of the akropolis and its strategic position controlling
the passes connecting the area with Ambrakia, Thessaly and Dodona,
clearly identify Kastritsa as one of the most important sites of the Ioannina
basin.
In the 11th – 12th century, on the western side of the hill and within
the ancient walls, the Monastery of St. John the Baptist was built. In the
18th c. it was ravaged and looted by the Ottomans. In 1854 it was used as
a camp by the Ottomans and in 1913 by the Greeks, whereas in 1916 it
was turned into an orphanage. The monastery consists of the church, the
two-storey building of cells and a chapel dedicated to the new martyrs St.
George and St. Filothei. The complex is surrounded by a stone enclosure
with an entrance on the south side. The monastery operates until today.

The fortiication wall of Kastritsa has ive gates (three on the east
side, one on the north and one on the southwest). Another rear gate
on the southwest side has fallen into disuse and was sealed off at
a later stage. Naturally fortiied areas were chosen for the location
of the gates. The construction of access roads was also taken into
account. The gates have the shape of a corridor, as a long passage
is formed between two overlapping sections of the wall. They are
lanked by towers or bends and their construction is monumental.
External cornerstones are usually deeply drafted. This feature possibly
acted as a building guide for the exact itting of superimposed plinths.
Gate I, the southernmost of the eastern section (3,20m. wide) is
located at the point where the wall bends to the east. In order to
strengthen security, the western branch extends to the interior of the
citadel for a length of 4,50m. A retaining wall barely visible today, was,
most probably, part of a ramp leading to the entranceway. On the
inside, two stones bearing pivot holes for the support of a double door
are preserved in situ. The gate fell out of use in a subsequent period
and its opening was blocked with masonry stones of various sizes and
mortar.
Apart from the towers lanking the gates, the fortiication wall of
Kastritsa is reinforced by towers only on its S – SW side. Its defensive front,
about 300m. long, delimits a rectangular projection in the eastern part
which is strengthened by two towers: a rectangular on the west, and
a spear – shaped one on the east. Two more rectangular towers can
be found along the south defensive front. In all, the south stretch of
the enclosure is reinforced with towers and bends placed at regular
intervals of 35m. approximately.
The spear – shaped tower was identiied and sketched by the
English traveler and theologist Thomas S. Hughes, during his visit to the
hill, in January 1814. It was, however, during the recent project that
the area was cleared, and the tower was revealed to its full size: it
has a total length of 24m., and its base is 9m. wide. At the base of the

The earlier inds date to the end of the 3rd c. B.C. while the building
continued to be used after the roman conquest. The bronze coins of
emperors Anastasius A’ (491 – 518 A.D.) and Justinian A’ (527 – 565
A.D.) along with other inds, date to the last occupation phase.
The privileged location of the building bordering on main roads,
its large size, the impressive cistern, the presence of baths, the luxury
of the architectural decoration and ine pottery, clearly characterize
building E as one of the most signiicant structures of the ancient city.
