APPENDIX I
S-N Formula
In this Appendix, we illustrate how the S-N curves such as the one in Figure 8.22 can
be interpreted mathematically, and how problems such as Sample Problem 8.1 can
be solved using the generalized S-N formula.
The two constants A and B are unknown, and can be determined as follows. Let the
strength at N = 106 be S = Sn (endurance limit), let the strength at N = 103 be S = S3.
Substituting these values in Equation (I.1), we obtain:
log 10(Sn) = 6A + B
log 10(S3) = 3A + B
1 Sn S23
A = log 10 ¢ ≤ ; B = log 10 ¢ ≤
3 S3 Sn
1 Sn S23
log 10(S) = log 10 ¢ ≤ log 10(N) + log 10 ¢ ≤ (I.2)
3 S3 Sn
Now, given any value of N, one can find the corresponding strength, and vice versa.

log 10(S) = log 10 ¢ ≤ log 10(N) + log 10 ¢ ≤

i.e.,
(-0.2639)
log 10(S) = log 10(N) + 2.3131
3
For N = 104 cycles, we have:
( -0.2639)4
log 10(S) = + 2.3131 = 1.9612

Thus, at N = 104 cycles, S = 101.9612 = 91.45 ksi.
