BS CIVIL ENGINEERING 2-A

- A Howe truss is a truss bridge consisting of chords, verticals, and diagonals whose vertical
members are in tension and whose diagonal members are in compression.

- A scissor truss, also called a vaulted truss, is an A-frame structure that joins two triangular
“legs” with a top beam, or “pitch.” These legs join in the middle like the blades on an opened pair
of scissors, giving the truss its name. Most commonly, a vaulted roof will have a scissor truss at
each end.

- Hip Truss A common roof type, the hip truss is built to craft a hip-style roof. Hip roofs have
slopes on all four sides, meeting at a point in the center of the roof. Hip roof trusses are
especially beneficial for high wind and snowy conditions, as they are much more stable than
gable roofs.

- The bowstring truss, also known as the arched rib truss, uses similar components to other truss
systems such as the use of a top chord, bottom chord, struts, and ties.

- It is made of steel. Fan trusses are form of Fink roof truss. In Fan Trusses, top chords are divided
into small lengths in order to provide supports for purlins which would not come at joints in Fink
trusses.

- Fink trusses are mainly used as roof structures of. residential buildings; farms; garages; etc. In
most cases, timber is the main material for Fink trusses, however steel can also be an option.
