CSIT101 – Introduction to Computing

Lesson 1.4: Categories of Computers

Learning Task

1. If cost was not an issue, describe the characteristics of your ideal computer. What would you
use it for? Would you choose a handheld, portable, or desktop computer? Why?

For myself, I'll go with a laptop computer that combines power, efficiency, portability, and
comfort. A laptop with a superb keyboard and trackpad. Its display is easy on the eyes, bright,
and sharp enough that jagged edges and visible pixels aren't irritating. It should be capable of
handling most tasks, with the exception of intensive video editing. I chose a laptop because it
is easy to transport from place to place and can run all day without being plugged in.

Assessment

1. During the course of a normal day, keep a list of your encounters with computers of various
kinds. (Take a picture of it and list all the peripheral devices that are being used along with the
PC). Your list should show the place and time of the encounter, the type of interaction you had
with the technology, and the results of that interaction. (Remember, computers can take many
sizes and forms, so be alert to more than just PCs.)

Since face-to-face classes have yet to begin, I took advantage of the opportunity to take some
photos in our home. And here are some peripheral devices that are used in conjunction with the
computer.

Keyboard

The outcome was positive because I
was able to easily write my thoughts
using the keyboard.

Monitor

I can see what data I placed on my computer through the computer

monitor. It is quite beneficial to me because it allows me to view what
I did on my computer.

Speaker

I put a speaker on my computer so that I can clearly hear the

audio or sounds, and because of the speaker, anyone who
wants to watch movies, videos, or listen to music on the
computer can do so. Not only myself, but also individuals
who are blind can benefit from speakers by turning text into
sounds that can be heard through the use of speakers.

Mouse

I used a mouse because it makes my work easier and faster. This was
used because it allows me to manipulate non-selectable aspects of the
interface. It is also lightweight and portable.

Webcam

I am visible to the person with whom I am

conversing virtually via webcam. I'm more
confident in front of the camera now that I've
used it, especially when I'm using in high quality.
Because if we use good quality, it can make us
beautiful as well.
