How to Analyse an Advertisement

Answer these in point form:

1. What is the general ambience of the advertisement? What mood does it


create? How does it do this?

The mood create from this advertisement is one of power as it shows Katy Perry
sitting on a throne with a crown on her head with the colour red on the velvet of
the chair, on her dress and in her jewels showing the audience that she has power
as well as the phrase below her saying OWN THE THRONE. Showing she is
powerful as she owns the throne

2. What is the design of the advertisement? How are the basic components or
elements arranged?

There is a throne tipped on its side and a crown worn by a king on the ground

3. What is the relationship between pictorial elements and written material


and what does this tell us?

The threes OWN THE THRONE is in the middle of the advertisement and the
imagery of her sitting on the throne as it is tipped over and the kings crown
rolling on the ground shows that she is in control and no one can tell her what to
do or over rule her as she is the most powerful

4. What is the use of space in the advertisement? Is there a lot of ‘white


space” or is it full of graphic and written elements?

The use of space is taken up as if she is in a room of white and gold as if she is in
a palace in the throne room making the image feel more realistic. As wording is
minimal on the advertisement letting the image of Katy Perry on the Throne
shows ‘exactly what it is like to wear this perfume’

5. What signs and symbols do we find? What role do they play in the ad's
impact?

Katy is shown as the queen almost as she is the one on the throne, she is wearing
the crown meaning she is the most powerful out of all

6. If there are figures (men, women, children, animals) what are they like?
What can be said about their facial expressions, poses, hairstyle, age, sex,
hair colour, ethnicity, education,
occupation, relationships (of one to the other)?

There are no other figures in the advertisement only katy Perry sitting ontop of
the throne

7. What does the background tell us? Where is the advertisement taking
place and what significance does this background have?

She is in a room of gold and white showing she is rich as well as sophisticated as
she has an expensive and a precise as well as good sense of style

8. What action is taking place in the advertisement and what significance


does it have? (This might be described as the ad's "plot.")

The ad’s plot shows katy Perry sitting on a throne that has been tipped over,
wearing a crown and holding a royal jewel incrusted with diamonds and rubies.

It evokes the emotional response of the sense of power in the person looking at
the advertisement it is shown through the imagery of the picture as well as the
wording in the middle of the advertisement. Also, the colour red is displayed in
the advertisement provoking the sense that she has power

11. What is the item being advertised and what role does it play in our
culture and society?
The item being advertised is katy Perry’s new perfume fragrance KILLER
QUEEN. Perfume is worn by almost 80% of the world’s population of women for
any occasion it could just be a casual day of doing grocery shopping, going on
dates or going to work

12. What sociological, political, economic or cultural attitudes are indirectly


reflected in the advertisement? An advertisement may be about a pair of blue
jeans, but it might, indirectly, reflect such matters as sexism, alienation,
stereotyped thinking, conformism, generational conflict, loneliness, elitism,
and so on.

The sociological attitude of this advertisement shows one of power. Many people
crave the feeling of having power so this brings the person reading the
advertisement wanting the product as she will have a sense of power
