That some couples choose not to have children may also be caused by an unhappy
childhood. Firstly, for individuals who grew up under unfavourable conditions, the idea of
having kids might be frightening. For instance, a person who experienced poverty as a kid
may decide not to have children if he/she thinks that he/she cannot handle the economic
burden of bringing up a child. Secondly, individuals who have received little or no love from
their parents may not trust themselves to be good enough parents. Wishing not to harm
their future kids emotionally, such people may stay away from becoming parents.
