Prescription Test #2 – Oral Liquids

Read each prescription carefully and answer the associated questions. (15 marks total)

1) Rx: Erythromycin Ethylsuccinate 200 mg/5 ml


1 tsp tid x 10 days

Calculate:
a) How many ml per day will the patient take? 15 ml
b) What is the total quantity to be dispensed (disregard the pack size)? 150 ml
c) If the available pack size is 100 ml, what is the total quantity to dispense? 200 ml
(2 bottles)
d) Translate the sig: take 1 teaspoonful (=5 ml) by mouth three times daily for 10
days and discard remaining portion.

2) Rx: Cephalexin 125 mg/5 ml


225 mg po tid cc x 10 days

Calculate:
a) How many ml are in a single dose? 9 ml
b) How many ml per day will the patient take? 27 ml
c) What is the total quantity to be dispensed (disregard the pack size)? 270 ml
d) If the available pack sizes are 75 ml, 100 ml, and 150 ml, what pack size would
you choose and what is the total quantity to be dispensed? Use 150 ml pack size,
dispense 300 ml (2 bottles)
e) Translate the sig: take 9 ml by mouth three times daily with food for 10 days and
discard remaining portion.

3) Rx: Zantac syrup 15 mg/ml


150 mg q12h
Mitte: 400 ml

Calculate:
a) How many ml are in each dose? 10 ml
b) What is the total days’ supply? 20 days
c) Translate the sig: take 2 teaspoonful (=10 ml) by mouth every 12 hours.

4) Rx: Codeine Phosphate 15 mg/5 ml


15 mg po q6h
Mitte: 100 ml

Calculate:
a) How many ml are in a single dose? 5 ml
b) What is the total days’ supply? 5 days
c) Translate the sig: take 1 teaspoonful (=5 ml) by mouth every 6 hours.
