LEYLAND B52
The Leyland B52 utilises the
Leyland Bus modular system of
tried-and tested components in a
simple chassis system which can
be modified to meet individual
customers' requirements and the
varying legal needs of different
countries.
Like Leyland's famous
Olympian double decker, B52 uses
perimeter frame construction
techniques combining strength with
low floor height and easy
bodybuilding. The chassis can
either be bodied locally, or
supplied with a Leyland body in
either fully assembled or CKD
condition.
The chassis produces a superb
modern city bus with wide flat
floors, easy to use entrance/exits,
outstanding ride, comfort,
maneouvrability, performance and vehicle weight of 16160 kg and the
Leyland reliability.
Ride comfort is assured by the
wide based, low frequency full air
suspension — used across the
whole range of Leyland buses,
This suspension provides a smooth
ride, free of pitch and roll, and is
easy and cheap to maintain. This
suspension system has been tried
and tested all over the World and
is equally at home on uneven
surfaces or smooth motorways.
The perim eter framing of B52
allows a wide, low step entrance to
be fitted and also enables
generous approach and departure
angles to be incorporated giving
the finished vehicle maximum route
availability.
B52 has a designed gross
passenger capacity can be varied
to suit the particular operation.

capacity to European standards is
52.
Power is provided by the
Leyland TL11 turbocharged engine
— a clean, quiet, highly fuel
efficient engine, rear mounted for
low noise and easy maintenance.
The engine produces up to 183 kW
(245 bhp) at 2100 rev/min, and
impressive torque back-up right
across the speed range, peaking at
969 Nm (715 lbf ft) at 1300 rev/min.
Transmission for city bus work
is by the renowned Leyland 5
speed Hydracyclic gearbox with
semi or fully automatic control.
 The Hydracyclic was developed
from the world famous Leyland
Pneumocyclic to tackle the higher
torque of the TL11. It features
hydraulic actuation but provides
the same high standards of smooth
gearchanging, reliability and low
maintenance as the Pneumocyclic.
The transmission incorporates
an integral hydraulic retarder
which operates automatically when
the footbrake is used, and provides
retardation right down to (3.2
km/hr) 2 mile/hr. The retarder
makes a significant contribution to
increased brake liner life.
The gearbox is unit mounted to
the engine via a charged fluid
coupling which provides constant
oil flow and low operating
temperatures.
Braking is smooth, powerful
and fade free. A full air system
conforming to the stringent EEC
standards and with failsafe air
operated spring brakes for
parking.
Cooling has received particular
attention in line with normal
Leyland practice. It features a
large front mounted radiator to
increase ram effect and remove
the radiator from the warm area.
Steering is power assisted —
light and easy to operate and when
combined with the ergonomic
layout of the driving compartment,
instrumentation, etc. makes the
driver's life easy, enabling him to
concentrate on his driving and the
wellbeing of his passengers.
B52 has sparkling performance
with excellent smooth acceleration
allowing the vehicle to easily slip in
and out of the traffic. The
combination of power, smooth
transmission, outstanding ride and
equalised braking means
passengers are not subjected to
stresses and strains during
acceleration, deceleration or
manoeuvring.
