QUESTION 1

a. A manufacturer of sachet water estimated that the total revenue and total cost (in dollars)
functions are given by 𝑅(𝑞) = 5𝑞 − 0.003𝑞 2 and 𝐶(𝑞) = 300 + 1.1𝑞 respectively,
where 𝑞 is quantity and 0 ≤ 𝑞 ≤ 1000 units.
i. Sketch the marginal cost and marginal revenue graphs on the same axis.

ii. Use your graphs in (i) to determine the quantity which maximizes profit.

iii. What production level gives the minimum profit? [1 mark]

b. Water is being pumped into an inverted conical tank at the rate of 100ft3/min. The height
of the tank is 20ft and its radius is 5ft. How fast is the water level rising when the water
height is 10ft? [4 marks]

c. What is the relationship between average rate of change of a function, 𝑓(𝑥) over the
interval [𝑎, 𝑏] and the instantaneous rate of change of a function, 𝑓(𝑥) at 𝑥 = 𝑎.

the number of cars rented per day at x dollars per rental. Find each of the following.
i. The elasticity as a function of x . [1 Mark]
ii. The value of x for which E (x ) = 1 . Interpret the meaning of this price.

iii. The price x at which total revenue is a maximum. [1.5 Marks]

c. A river is 1 mile wide. Frank wants to get from point A to point B on the opposite side of
the river, 3 miles downstream. If Frank can run 5 miles per hour and can swim 3 miles
per hour, what is the least amount of time in which he can get from A to B? [4 Marks]

a. The Ghana Football Association determines that if 𝑥 thousand Ghana Cedis are spent
on advertising the local league, then 𝑆(𝑥) sponsorship offers will be received, where
