PART 1. EVALUATE
What are tidal stream charts and how do you use it?
Answer:
Drift/rate and set are terms used to characterize tidal streams, where drift/rate refers to the current's
speed and set to the current's direction.
The tidal diamond table includes thirteen rows and three columns for each diamond. At both spring
and neap tides, the three columns indicate the tidal stream's bearing|set and speed|drift|rate in
knots.
Dir is in charge of the streams (degrees)
Rates of spring tides (knots)
Answer:
The chart datum is the plane below which all depths on a navigational chart are reported. It is also
the plane to which all tidal heights are referred, so the true depth of water can be estimated by
adding the tidal height to the documented depth.
PART 2. EXTEND
Why is the lowest astronomical tide set out to be the chart datum?
Answer:
The justification for utilizing LAT is that even at low water, there will always be at least the depth
indicated by the soundings. Any higher datum will undoubtedly result in less water than the charted
depth on occasion.
