DC Series Start, Rational Reversal and Load Characteristics under Different

Voltages

Student(s) Name(s)

Date:
Purpose:

The main objective of this lab was to understand and determine the terminals and operations of a

motor as a series wound motor, its connection and starting, rotational reversal i.e. identification of

difference between clockwise and anti-clockwise rotation and operating it in the both directions.

Experimental set up

First of all the “ActiveServo” software was started which automatically started the servo-machine

test system into PC mode. The motor is wired according to the circuit diagram given below and the

“Speed Control” mode was used in order to note and record the characteristic curves. All the

configurations were made according to the given setting and the torque and current curves were plotted

accordingly. After that the servo machine test system was activated and the motor was driven at a speed

of 3500 rpm. The DC supply was on and the output current was set to 1.5 A. The output was enabled

from the button and the output voltage was slowly increased to 220 V. With the help of output ramp

button, the output characteristics were noted and recorded.

Similarly the same procedure was repeated for different values of output voltage like 100 V and

Output current of 2.5 A and the corresponding output characteristics were noted and recorded.

Circuit Diagram:

The connection diagram for the experimental set up is given below.

Results:

First of all the output voltage was set to a value of 220 V and the torque and load characteristics

were plotted accordingly as shown in the figure below.

Analysis and Discussions:

The purpose of this lab experiment was to study and determine the terminals and

connection of a dc series wound motor and its operation in both the directions i.e. clockwise and

anticlockwise directions. The torque and load characteristics of the given motor for an output voltage of

220 V and a dc current of 1.5 A was studied and recorded.

During the experiment it was noted that the motor should never be operated on no load. The

reason is that on no load, the speed of the motor increases very rapidly which can result in the overrun or

racing of the motor.

Similarly it was also noted that when the load was small, the excitation field and armature current

were also minimal. When the load was increased gradually, the armature current also increased

proportionally but the speed decreased sharply. The motor was found to be rotating in the anti-clockwise

direction.

Conclusions:

The experiment was performed successfully and all the results obtained were also according to

the requirements of the lab. The following points were noted:

 The armature current remains small for small load

 The armature current increases as the load is increased

 The motor rotated in the anti-clockwise direction

 The speed of motor falls sharply as the load is increased
