INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Mental Health is the foundation of human well-being. It refers to the ability to

think, learn and understand emotions. It states the balance of both environment and

within oneself. Including physical, social, cultural, spiritual, and other factors that

contribute to the balance. We, the center of the environment, need to be educated to be

aware of the factors that might affect our well-being. The hardest enemy that we may

encounter in our life is, ourselves. We are already the victim of our environment. The

project will start in educational institutions. The educational institution is an

administrative unit run by a head or principal with its faculty staff such as teachers and

personnel. The institution which students registered, activities executed are regulated by

legal approval, follows national curriculum, and financed with either public or private.

According to the US News and World Report, a few small studies had been

conducted and they found out that teaching mental health in educational institutions

improved the student’s attitude towards treatment and increased their willingness to seek

from a counselor and boosted their overall mental health literacy. As stated by Joe

McLean 2019, mental health is not yet mandatory to institutions’ but teachers and

administrators need to give attention to the importance of self-care and emphasize the fact

that mental health is an integral part of health and well-being.

The objective of the project is to effectuate mental health as part of curriculum in

educational institutions. The knowledge about mental health needs to start with the

young. The only way they would understand more about mental health and stop the

existing stigma if they receive the necessary education. As educational institutions need

to foster an environment where mental health issues can be identified and not to be

discriminated. The project will benefit not just the students but also the faculty staff,

personnel, and administration members.

I. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1.) How will the students respond to the implementation of mental health course as

part of the education curriculum?

2.) How does including mental health improves the country’s education system?

3.) What are the implementations that the researchers are going to conduct?

The SEL program

According to Cefai et al 2018, the effective school mental health programs mainly

target the promotion of social and emotional learning (SEL) and resilience as well as the

prevention of social, emotional, and behavioral difficulties, including risk behaviors. In

statement of Franklin et al 2012, the impact of SEL programs carried out in the United

States and in Europe and mainly delivered by trained teachers in partnership with mental

health professionals have pointed up twofold benefits of intervention; students

participating in such programs display enhanced social and emotional competencies and

reduced externalizing and internalizing problems compare to controlled group of peers

according to Corcoran et al 2018.

A statement by Casel 2013, research has documented a significant impact of SEL

programs on students’ behavior from kindergarten up to high school including improved

social-emotional competencies across the five SEL competencies. According to Conley et

al 2015, enhanced self-esteem and connection to school, better classroom behavior,

improved academic performance and motivation, as well as reduced conduct problems,

bullying and aggression and less emotional distress such as stress, anxiety and

depression.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Foreign Study

Promoting Mental Health in Educational Institutions

1.1 In statement by Adams and Dogra 2018, in Review of mental health promotion

interventions in Schools, their review has demonstrated that there is some success for

interventions, many of which were underpinned by the whole-school approach or similar

frameworks. This was also the case for other intervention types that they were not so

broad in scope. However, training teachers in delivery was important and long-term

outcomes unclear. Thus, building on previous work, they have demonstrated that there

remain gaps in knowledge, that there are issues with sustainability of universal

approaches, and that success, to some extent, relies on cooperation, training and

involvement of the schools and the young people themselves. Furthermore, modes of

delivery and the nature of the interventions are important and need to appeal to young

people. This could be facilitated by more scoping work in terms of digital health

promotion. In a digital age, with digital tools, mobile apps, robotics, social media and the

internet all forming a central part in daily life, there is potential to integrate a whole-

school approach with digital interventions, and there is room to be creative with universal

mental health promotion.

1.2 In regards with the statement of John P. Salerno 2016, in Effectiveness of

universal school-based mental health awareness programs among youth in the US: a
ARELLANO UNIVERSITY
PLARIDEL CAMPUS
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE

systematic review, the review on universal mental health intervention programs in US

schools overall found improvements in mental health knowledge, attitudes, and help-

seeking in adolescents. Nonetheless, internal validity, causal assessment, and quality of

evidence were weakened since most studies did not use rigorous study designs and

procedures. Most included studies did not examine all 3 outcomes even though the

literature demonstrates that these 3 outcomes are highly interrelated. Future researchers

should intend to implement these kinds of studies with rigorous procedures, RCT study

designs, long-term follow up, and evaluating multiple outcomes that affect mental health.

In addition, future researchers should more often consider implementing interventions in

school settings that contain more minority/vulnerable population representation.

Local Study

Promoting Mental Health in Educational Institutions

A study by Jerome Visperas Cleofas entitled Student involvement, mental health

and quality of life of college students in a selected university in Manila, Philippines,

described that social and mental health aspects of student welfare in tertiary level

institutions have gained more attention from stakeholders of education in the Philippines,

wherein college students are still considered in the adolescent youth bracket. News report

have revealed college students involved in violent acts, such as murder transpiring within

(GMA News, 2012) and outside university premises (Baclay 2010; Pedrosa 2013). Also,

there is an increase in incidence of suicide committed by college students through various

ARELLANO UNIVERSITY
PLARIDEL CAMPUS
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE

forms such as forms such as jumping from a building (Manila Bulletin, 2013) and

shooting self with a gun (PHnews, 2013). Commentaries from various journalistic

publications in the Philippines argue that these destructive exhibition of social and mental

problems among the youth can be attributed to both and academic factors, and that

addressing these problems requires a holistic approach coming from various social

institutions such as family, the school and policy-making bodies (Cruz, 2013;

Salaverria, 2013; Sauler, 2013; Tomacruz, 2018).

In the context of recently enacted Mental Health Act in the Philippines (RA 11036)

and the dearth of literature situated in the Philippines context on the mental health status

among college students, the present research aims to examine the relationship among

student involvement, mental health status and quality of life among college students in a

selected university in the Philippines.

METHODOLOGY

The part focuses on showing the process that the researchers used to conduct the

study. The researchers established a concrete plan to lead the study to the right direction.

The plan is significant because it will serve as the researchers support to achieve the

study objective. The objective is also set within the researchers itself as the courage to

successfully finish the study.

I. RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers used Action Research Design. The Action Research Design is the

most suitable discipline in answering our research questions because the study focuses on

implementing change within the community. Thus, the study offers different programs to

accomplish the project such as intervention program and webinar. The research design

will help the researchers and the readers to foster deep understanding of a given situation

that can lead to personal and professional development.

To clearly attain the necessary information, we needed quantitative type data,

descriptive statistics which will give the summary of the data gathered and includes

measurements of averages and variability. The researchers will be needing both primary

and secondary sources in the purpose of evidence or data gathering.

II. RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The researchers chose (30) respondents to participate in the study project. The

number of respondents were decided by the researchers with the reason of equally

divided by (15) students from senior department and (15) students from college

department regardless of gender. The student respondents are age ranged from 17 – 23

years old and above. The age and position serve as the criteria because the researchers

believe that the perspective of students with aforementioned age range are different from

the college students as they can be considered as teenagers while the college students as

an adult in terms of the topic mental health considering the generation they are born.

The researchers used random sampling as their sample design. The random

sampling is chosen because it will give the respondents the equal probability of being

included as the researchers will give the assignment randomly. Through the random

sampling, the participants were selected using the probability sampling method to avoid

any form of biased treatment as the study requires different views and perspective.

III. RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researchers measured the variables through giving online survey questionnaire.

The survey questionnaire is designed with using Likert scale and multiple choice. The

survey questionnaires were conducted through e-mail and online media platforms. The

researchers also used existing data as part of the instrument. The archival data and

previous experiments were gathered as inclusion to the study. The mentioned type of

instrument is chosen by the researchers as the appropriate approach in gathering data that

will help answer the research questions.

IV. STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

The above table correspond to the researcher’s minor question; “how will the

students respond to the implementation of mental health course as part of the education

curriculum?”. The statements in the table are about the effect of the implementation onto

the student’s well-being (refer to the statement 2, 4 and 5 in the table) that allow them to

develop their academic skills and behavior at the institution. Stated by Kutash,

Duchnowski, & Green 2011, improvements in behavioral and affective form of

engagement refelct removal of barriers to learning. That includes the negative student

behaviors (e.g.: violating school rules) and attitudes (e.g: dislike of school). Improved

student engagement, which increases access to instructions, enhances student’s ability to

acquire the academic skills. And, the table also include the institution’s environment

(refer to the statement 1, 3 and 4 in the table) because the researchers believe that the

environment greatly affect the well-being of the students and educators.. As per say by

World Health Organization, recommending that schools (or institutions) function as

one of the primary mental health support systems for students, enabling the planning, and

the implementation of a broad spectrum of mental health actions that encompass

promotion, prevention, intervention and rehabilitation. According to World Health

Organization’s Global School Health Initiative, the importance of focusing on and

enhancing the psychosocial environment in schools with a view of fostering emotional

and social well-being were emphasized.

The researchers conclude that Senior High school students, are aware of the effect

of mental health course in the education curriculum, with weighted mean of 4.48 or

The above table is about the institution’s system. The researchers believe,

implementing mental health will allow the quality of education, environment, and system

to improve and develops additional programs to address. Stated by Victoria, State

Government, institutions, including the educators, if given the resources and tools to

promote and model behaviour and values, can lead to build inclusive and safe school

communities to support everyone’s well-being and improve learning outcomes.

According to Stephen E. Brock & H. Thomas Brant 2015, improve school-community

efficacious decisions and best use of resources and to make support over time more

consistent and cohesive. According to Herrman 2001, Fostering of these individual,

social and environmental qualities and the avoidance of the converse are the objectives of

mental health promotion and prevention of mental disorders.

As conclusion of the results, implementation of mental health will support the

country’s education system along with the institution, with weighted mean of 4.33 or

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION

This chapter serves as the finalization of all the data gathered by the researchers.

The researchers gave part on the interpretation of results on the previous chapter. The

findings of the researchers greatly helped in understanding the perspective of the

respondents. The objective of this chapter is to show the overall analysis of data where

the researchers would give the elaboration of suggestions and comments of the

respondents pertaining to the research project. Moreover, the researchers recommend the

study to factors that would gain benefit.

REASON FOR CHOOSING THE RESEARCH

The researchers chose to study the field of promoting mental health because the

society has worsened its perspective when it comes to mental health issues. People

weren’t educated enough creating and increasing stigma about mental illness. Specifically

applied in educational institutions. The aim of the researchers is to give a proper

education about mental health that will start in the institution as it is an environment

PLARIDEL CAMPUS
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE

composed of different individuals who might be suffering and gaining a negative effect

on their health, including the reason of stress and pressure.

The lack of attention towards mental health education is what the researchers

wanted to address. The fact that educational institutions serve as a second home to the

students and educators. Yet, fostering the student’s well-being aren’t promoted enough.

The researchers believe that promoting mental health in educational institutions will

improve the behavior and attitude of the students and developing progress in the

institution’s environment through applying in the education curriculum. According to

Secker, Mental health promotion are associated with improving the quality of life and

potential for health rather than amelioration of symptoms. That should be recognized, not

as strategies for prevention but as mental health promotion in its positive sense.

The researchers used Action Research design. It gives the idea of implementing a

change in the community. As the project of the researchers aim to change the educational

institutions way of fostering the student’s well-being along with its environment and a

change in the society’s perspective about mental health issues. The data gathered came

from the survey questionnaires that the researchers conducted in its respondents.

Designed with Likert scale to assess the respondents’ opinion about the study. Including

an additional research to provide support in analyzing and interpreting data. Used

statistical treatment of data were the weighted mean and verbal interpretation of the

results were identified.

The table shows the overall result from the survey questionnaire that the

researchers conducted to its respondents. The results are not that far from each other.

College students have a high average than Senior High School students. In terms of

mental health course supporting to improve the well-being of the students and the

institution, the College students garnered a weighted mean of 4.68 with verbal

interpretation of Strongly Agree while the Senior High School students had 4.48

weighted mean with verbal interpretation of Agree.

The second case were promoting mental health improves the country’s education

and institution’s system, the College students had a total weighted mean of 4.57 with

verbal interpretation of Strongly Agree whilst Senior High School students had weighted

mean of 4.33 with the interpretation of Agree.

The last case were intervention and webinar programs are the researchers chosen

method to promote mental health. The College students gave a weighted mean result of

4.01 with the interpretation of Agree. While the weighted mean of the Senior High

School students is not far from the latter’s result which had a total weighted mean of 3.91

with a verbal interpretation of Agree.

Based on the data gathered, the hypothesis of the researchers was supported that

promoting mental health in educational institutions through applying in education

curriculum will help shape the well-being of the students and improve the environment of

the institution. Including, helping remove existing stigma about mental illness and

prevents discrimination. According to Hogson et al., mental health promotion is viewed

as reduction of morbidity from mental illness and the enhancement of the coping

capabilities of a member of community.

II. CONCLUSION

The researchers achieved the conclusion that promoting mental health in

educational institutions has its effectiveness in developing progress to not just the

students but also the educators’ well-being. The start of promoting mental health through

the education curriculum help to lessen the negative insight of individuals when it comes

to mental health. Moreover, it provides additional support to organizations whose goal is

to expand the knowledge of the people about mental health.

Furthermore, the researchers added that promotion of mental health serve as a tool

for educational institutions to impose additional programs to address and foster a safer

environment for the students’ and educators who might be suffering from mental illness.

Enhances the student’s learning and social skills. Concluded that through promotion of

mental health in educational institution, it will gain enough attention and thus valued

more which motivates people improve it.

III. RECOMMENDATION

The researchers recommend the research project to the different educational

institutions. The research project will help the institutions to practice the importance of

the well-being of the students’ and educators as it is their second home. Moreover,

improves the institutions facility when it comes to responding the needs of the students’

and educators.

Additionally, the researchers recommend the research project to the students,
