Impact of social media on mental health

Since the last two decade most scientists said that we are now living in an age of information
and communication technology. They were right, nowadays social media play an important role in our
life by providing us a convenient way to do communication, getting information, and also entertaining.
However, we saw many people are raised their problem of using social media on their mental health, so
what are the impact of social media on their mental health? To answer this question in detail we would
like to define 4 most effective points to descript. The first point is social media cause anxiety, the second
point is social media cause stress, the third point is social media cause depression, last but not least is
social media cause loneliness.

Social media cause to have anxiety. When the smartphone was invented, we start using it and
live it as our 6th sense, we are at least checking our phone once a day, to know that does anyone
message us and we missed it. The researcher who researched British adults in 2012 had been reported
that forty-five percents of them feel unrelaxable when they are not able to access their social media or
when they cannot access the messages of their social networking.

Social media cause stress. As we know that social media is a source of information, most
scientists suggested that we should not open social media 1 hour after waking up, because the
information that we could get from it may contain bad news which could stress us and ruin our day.
Moreover, some people are most likely to compare their lives with their friends’ lives, they stress
themselves when they think they are at a low level compared to their friends.

Social media cause depression. As we said above social media contains some bad news and
sensitive information that could ruin our day. When sensitive information related to the user was
published, it could be judged by many people, at least with some reaction sticker like or dislike. In
addition, if the viewer leaves any bad comments, it could affect the user’s feelings or we could say this
could depress the user. More seriously the report from Social Media Victims Law Center had research on
social media and depression analyzed among 15 suicidal teens, 67% of them felt worse after using social
media.

Social media cause loneliness. When social media become a convenient way of communication,
people especially young adults chose to stay home and do communication. It feels relaxed but this is one
of the main concerns of the present virtual society. When they spend much time actively on social
media, they could lack face-to-face contact through social media moreover it could fail to develop
empathy and feeling of deep connection, which makes them feel even more isolated.

In Conclusion, we see that there is a lot of impact of social media on mental health, from anxiety,
and stress to depression which could lead to suicide case. Even if we just spend a lot of time on the
internet this could lead us to have a lack of face-to-face problems. So, with all this information we
believe that to reduce the impact caused by social media on our mental health, we should define the
goal of using social media, try to avoid bad and sensitive news, and spend less time than we can use
social media.
