1) Choose the correct statements from the following for a multi degree freedom system vibrating at
various resonance frequency: (1M)
a) At higher resonant frequency, its vibration mode shape can be seen easily and it has higher
amplitude.
b) At higher resonant frequency, its vibration mode shape cannot be seen easily and it has lesser
amplitude.
c) At higher resonant frequency, it has higher modes and it has higher amplitude.
d) At lower resonant frequency, its vibration mode shape cannot be seen easily and it has higher
amplitude.
e) At lower resonant frequency, its vibration mode shape can be seen easily and it has higher
amplitude.
f) At lower resonant frequency, it has lower modes and it has lower amplitude.

2) For a periodic loading function shown in figure is defined by 𝑃(𝑡) = sin⁡( 𝑇 𝑡). Find the Fourier

coefficient 𝑎1 of this loading function, if 𝑃0 = (Product of last two numerical digits of your Institute ID)
in N. (2M)
3) A shaker table for compaction of concrete is installed at Concrete laboratory, BITS Pilani Hyderabad
campus. It is supported by four identical springs of stiffness 3948N/m with a speed control motor as
shown in figure. The natural time period of this system is 0.3 sec. When the motor runs (shaker
vibrates) at 180rpm, the amplitude of vertical motion of table is 25mm in its undamped state.
If the steel springs are replaced by four rubber isolators which provide the same stiffness along with
damping effect and run at 180rpm then the amplitude of motion is 10mm. Find the percentage damping
in the system due to rubber isolator. (2M)
Compare the effectiveness of the above two systems if motor runs at R = (Product of last two numerical
digits of your Institute ID) rpm. Effectiveness of systems can be compared in terms of their
displacement amplitude and force transferred to the foundation. (4M)
The spring shaker system was initially loaded with a concrete cube mold with compacted concrete
weighing mass of m1 = (Product of last two numerical digits of your Institute ID) Kg. This existing
mold is suddenly removed while simultaneously another concrete cube mold with fresh concrete of
same mass is dropped on table from a height of 1m. Predict the amplitude ratio of above two systems
after one cycle. (4M)
Spring Motor Rubber Motor

a) Spring Shaker system b) Rubber Isolated shaker system

4) Write the equation of motion for the following spring mass system shown. Find the natural frequency
of the system. (2M)

5) For a partial underground building with concrete floor is supported by steel columns as shown in figure
along with similar steel columns located 5m away in z-direction. The columns are pinned at top and
bottom supports and moment resisting connection at floor levels. Take mass M as equivalent weight
of (75 + product of last two numerical digits of your Institute ID) in kN.
Show schematic spring mass representation of system and find stiffness matrix. (2M)
Find natural frequencies and mode shapes (you may use MATLAB to solve for Eigen values and Eigen
vectors). Sketch the mode shapes. (2M)
Considering the design spectrum shown below find the peak displacements at each floor level using
SRSS combination rule by considering 100% of mass participation. (4M)
Find the force acting at each floor level due to all modes and the support reactions. (2M)
