Multi V CH150 error

Applied Date 1h. Apr. 2017 ~

Summary

CH150 is an error to prevent liquid compression which can induce serious compressor failure. If CH150 occurs, you should
check ODU, IDU and installation issue. This technical bulletin is a description for condition of CH150 and T/shooting.

Information

■ Symptom
CH150 occur.

■ Cause
CH150 occur if all of the following conditions are met.
1) Over 10 minutes from start-up and end of oil recovery operation.
2) Cooling operation
3) DSH (Discharge super-heat, discharge temp. – bubble temp.) is under 3 ℃
and compressor running over 10 minutes from start-up
4) Except defrosting operation, oil recovery operation, system OFF and simultaneous operation
■ Why does CH150 occurs? (liquid compression)
1. Installation fault

Case 1. Individual switch for each of indoor unit separately from the power supply
: Individual power switch can be the reason of compressor failure
If some of indoor units are OFF with EEV open, liquid refrigerant pass through EEV
of power OFF IDU without super-heating. It can cause liquid compression and compressor failure.
You can check this fault by LGMV data at job site like below
※ Additionally, It causes bad oil recovery. When the system is in oil recovery operation, all IDU’s EEV will be opened,
but power OFF IDU cannot open their EEV so the system will be lack of oil.

error between ODU
and IDU

Power OFF IDU

■ Site : India
■ Claim : CH29 (Compressor is damaged)
■ Cause : during operation, 20 IDUs among 30 IDUs are communication error.
IDUs power is off by end-user
■ This site software is before applying CH150. Liquid Back made compressor damage(CH29)
If current software is applied, Individual power cut by user, can makes CH150

20 IDUs among 30 IDUs are off(operating IDUs were 7 IDUs)

Compressor Hz Decreased

CH53

Discharge Superheat Decreased

If IDU unit power is off during operation, EEV is opened, much liquid ref. is bypassed to accumulator
It can make discharge superheat very low ,make CH150
Case 2. Installation fault in piping work
: Liquid refrigerant pass through
If Liquid pipe and gas pipe are connected without any IDU directly, liquid refrigerant pass through that point without
any super-heating. It can cause liquid compression and compressor failure. In this case you should check discharge
and suction super-heating (maybe very low) and piping also.

Almost all refrigerant pass through this direct

connection between gas and liquid pipe

Gas and liquid pipe

connection without IDU
■ Site : Korea, Office
■ Claim : CH150(dischage superheat low)
■ Cause : 1 IDU EEV connector is removed by installer

If liquid pipe and gas pipe is connected diretly, much liuquide refrigerant flows into gas pipe diectly.
It makes discharge superheat low.

Discharge Superheat = 2.4℃

One of liquid pipe for indoor unit is connected direclty with gas pipe.(installation fault)
Case 3. Refrigerant over flow
: This may occur when refrigerant too much in cycle. In cooling if refrigerant too much, high pressure and low pressure
over rise. In addition comp frequency and discharge temperature low. In this case, liquid refrigerant over flow from
Accum to comp, it can cause liquid compression and compressor failure.

■ Why does CH150 occurs? (liquid compression)
2. Product fault

Case 1. IDU EEV fault

: Liquid refrigerant pass through IDU (EEV fault unit) without super-heating
You can check this fault by LGMV data like below. OFF mode IDU will close their EEV by 40, but if there is some
fault at EEV refrigerant pass through EEV so in and out Temp. will go down. In case of serious problem, in and out
Temp. change reversely (Tin > Tout)
■ Site : Korea, Library
■ Claim : CH150(dischage superheat low)
■ Cause : 1 IDU EEV connector is removed by installer

Even 1 indoor unit EEV opens much, Compressor discharge superheat can be lower than 3℃,
So that can make CH150
In this data, there is no low discharge superheat because it is all indoor unit operation,
but in case of low load operation, CH150 can be happened.
★ EEV internal leakage at full close(small leakage), cannot make CH150 or weak cooling

▶ The reason why EEV internal leakage occurred at at full close

EEV internal leakage can be occurred because of foreign substance and corrosion Needle
Foreign substance can be copper chip and copper welding sludge.
Corrosion can be occurred when installation pipe is exposed atmosphere for long time.
These makes damage at valve seat of EEV, and makes internal leakage.

Worn(Damaged)
Worn(Damaged)

▶ Example of EEV internal leakage at full close

1) Site : Thailand, hotel

2) Even though almost 50% indoor unit has internal leakage, compressor discharge superheat is normal
and subcooling is 20℃
3) Problem : wall mount indoor unit has water discharge when it starts to run.
 in case of water discharge on wall mount indoor unit, refer to coresponding Technical Bulletin.

※ Compressor discharge superheat = discharge temp. – bubble temp.(Tbub)

Compressor discharge superheat >32℃
 No issue for compressor fault by liquid back

Subcooling is near 20℃

 No issue for weak cooling or ref. noise
※ Subcooling = bubble temp.(Tbub) – liquid temp.
▶ To prevent EEV leakage, following Installation method
1) Always apply nitrogen in case of welding. Refer to following installation manual content
2) Always use regulator in case of welding and leak test with nitrogen.
If high pressure nitrogen over 4.2MPa applied to EEV, EEV can be faulty.

Installation manual content for welding

▶ To prevent EEV leakage, install filter drier

Filter drier installation is recommended if following condition is satisfied

- High humidity region
- Long term exist between installation of pipe and installation of indoor unit
(Leaving piping for a long time before installing indoor and outdoor units)
- Wall mount, low static duct, 1way CST type indoor unit installation

Install filter drier parrarel to installation pipe to prevent pressure drop

Case 2. ODU SC(Sub cooler) fault
: Liquid refrigerant pass through sub cooler without super-heating
This fault has similar symptom like gas/liquid pipe direct connection. Almost all refrigerant pass through sub cooler
and very poor cooling and heating. You can check this fault by LGMV data like below.

Discharge Temp. is very low

at master unit
Poor cooling because of bypass
(= very few refrigerant flow in IDU) Sub cooler in and out Temp.
is almost equal to liquid pipe
Temp. In this case, there must
be some leakage in sub cooler.

If there is some leakage at sub cooler,

almost all refrigerant will go to accumulator
from liquid pipe. You should check EEV first
(Coil and body) and if there is no problem
at EEV, there may be leakage at HEX in the
Sub cooler. In this case you should replace
whole sub cooler assembly.
Case 3. HR unit SC(Sub cooler) fault
: Liquid refrigerant pass through HR unit sub cooler without super-heating
. You can check this fault by LGMV data like below

SC in and out Temp. change

reversely. It means bypass
between liquid and low
pressure gas pipe

Very long time (-) superheating

If there is some leakage at sub cooler in HR unit, very huge noise

occur. So you should check refrigerant noise first and check SC
EEV by visual and touching.

SC EEV neck breaking in HR unit

We improved the structure of EEV head at Aug.2015.
Check serial number of HR unit
Case 4. Discharge Temp. sensor fault
: This may occur when the discharge Temp. sensor is removed or assembled in reverse between compressor 1 and 2.
For example, if only one compressor is operated under the condition that the discharge Temp. sensors of
compressors 1 and 2 are changed, the discharge super-heating is detected to very low and the error will occur.

#1 Comp. #2 Comp.

Case 5. Reverse connection of compressor lead wire (power wire) between C1 and C2
: This may occur when only one compressor is operating while compressor power lines are reversed.
For example, if only one compressor is operated under the condition that compressor power lines are reversed,
the discharge super-heating is detected to very low and the error will occur.

The error is determined by the discharge

temperature of the No. 1 compressor.
